Reviving Two Old Series

Posted on 11/27/2002 4:15:06 PM PST by A.J.Armitage

I used to do two series of threads. One was about politics and government in the Greco-Roman civilization, and the other was my own columns. Here's a list of them:

Ancient Politics and Government

The American Constitutionalist

-In Defense of "Underage" Drinking
-Anarchy vs. the Right to Life
-Calling a Spade a Spade
-Enumerated Powers and National I.D. Cards
-Objectively Pro-Terrorist Pacifists
-Government Against the People
-Their Feet Run to Evil, and Make Haste to Shed Blood
-Sue Them Blind
-Centralization vs. Checks and Balances
-The Forgotten Perspective on Stem Cell Research
-Religious Liberty Suffers Defeat
-The Roots of Government Corruption

As you can see by looking at the dates, it was erratic, and eventually I stopped. I recently got a Freepmail asking if I could start again. If there's something gratifying to a writer, it's people complaining when you don't write.

So I'm going to start it again. If you'd like me to add you to the ping list, tell me.

Many years ago I had a book containing the World's Greatest Speeches and among them was Mark Anthony's funeral oration for Julius Caesar. Not Shakespeare's rendition but the original speech. Alas I loaned out the book and it lost its way home, therefore I was wondering if you knew where I could find that speech on the Internet?

Needless to say, as it was my private post to you that got you started again, please put me on your bump list.

I still believe that your posts were among the most erudite on this forum; and, considering the caliber of some of the other posters, that's quite a compliment.

There is no original version of Mark Antony's speech. Shakespeare based his version on clues in several of Plutarch's Lives: Caesar 66-67, Brutus 20, and Antony 14.

Thanks for the notice. Good look on your series.

How accurate is Suetonius? And what's your verdict on the Romans? I can respect their belief in law and their role in spreading civilization, but if they were as bad as Suetonius says, it's hard not to have some mistrust and dislike for them.

If a Chick's opinion is worth anything, I found Suetonius to be quite consistent with Tacitus. Lotta weirdness goin' on there in Rome! Probably the lead water pipes are the culprit, cebu' ?

Glad to see you'll continue, AJ--though I'm suprised to see that you've left out Aurelius, Plato, and Xenophon.
