On the next day, envoys from Alesia informed Caesar that Vercingetorix had convened the Gallic leaders so that they could decide how to proceed, whether they wished to execute or surrender him. Caesar demanded that they lay down their arms. The chieftains met him at the front of his camp, surrendered their weapons, and delivered Vercingetorix unto him. Having captured Alesia, Caesar gave one captive to each of his surviving soldiers as a reward.

Julius Howell enlisted at 16 to fight for the Confederacy in 1862. In this 1947 recording in DC, Howell at age 101, recalls his Civil War exploits as a cavalryman at Petersburg and Richmond and his memory of the assassination of President Lincoln from a Union POW camp. The title of general is in ironic quotes because his was an honorary moniker bestowed on him years later by a Confederacy society.

Jack Posobiec and Laura Loomer turned up in New York City’s Central Park tonight and caused chaos during the production of Julius Ceaser. Laura Loomer ran up on stage screaming, “This is political violence against the right and it’s unacceptable!” The production company halted the play as the crowd shouted down Loomer telling her to get off the stage. Security personnel ascended on the stage to escort her off. Posobiec, who filmed the altercation, then started shouting at the audience calling them Nazis and “Goebbels.”

Here’s betting FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski’s proposal on “preserving Internet freedom and openness” doesn’t touch the Institute for Global Communications (IGC) and its offshoot the Association for Progressive Communications (APC). In Net Neutrality, Julius style, some animals are always more equal than others. While some tend to see the Internet as FoxNews.com on one side and HuffPo on the other, it’s really WorldWide Net versus IGC/APC. Plebes of the Net Unite. While citizen journalist bloggers pay Internet server fees and worry about bandwidth, for decades now IGC has been funded by the Tides Foundation.

As white supremacist Eugene Terreblanche is buried, the dangerously charismatic Julius Malema threatens the country's future. We are not here to mourn the white supremacist Eugene Terreblanche, whose funeral took place yesterday, but since his name is on the world's lips, let's face the truth: the saddest thing about his murder last weekend is that it obscured an event that casts an infinitely darker shadow. The event took place in Zimbabwe, and involved, as fate would have it, Julius Malema, the ANC Youth League leader whose repeated singing of an old struggle song about shooting Boers is viewed by many...

Clooney film faces censorship (But You Know The New York Slimes...) by Julia Wheeler The film which won George Clooney an Oscar may be banned in one of the countries where it was shot because of political sensitivities. Syriana was partly filmed in the United Arab Emirates. The authorities there are still deciding whether the film, which is a political thriller, will be shown.

Researchers at the Iowa Great Ape Trust are putting eight intelligent bonobos in a human-like living situation to study how culture may emerge. From the Associated Press: The bonobos will be able to cook in their own kitchen, tap vending machines for snacks, go for walks in the woods and communicate with researchers through computer touchscreens. The decor in their 18-room home includes an indoor waterfall and climbing areas 30 feet high... Using a network of cameras and computers, the bonobos can see visitors who ring the doorbell -- and will be able to choose through a computer touchscreen who...
