What has happened to Free Republic? [What difference at this point can it possibly make?]

Posted on 03/17/2016 3:13:11 PM PDT by katwoman5779

Since Obuma was elected to POTUS, I have been coming to Free Republic to get news, opinions and a few laughs. Most of the serious posts were bemoaning the out of control government and what could be done about it. "Oh Whoa is Me!". Then along comes a constitutional conservative. For the first time since Ronald Reagan, we have a constitutional candidate running for the GOP nomination. This man was elected by conservatives to go to Washington and stand up to the elites that no longer listen to the American people. He didn't go to Washington and "fall in" with the crowd. He went there and stood up to them just like he said it would - calling a spade a spade. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how otherwise intelligent people can fall for the likes of Donald Trump. This man was donating to the same people we were fighting to throw out of office the last eight years. Suddenly he is a conservative after years of joining with the liberals to promote big fat bloated government. He is not an outsider. He has been greasing the palms of the slime bags in Washington for 30 years. He can't even define what conservatism is. Wake up America. You are no better than the sycophants that suck up to Obuma. You can't see that Trump is just pushing your buttons with his rhetoric - just like Obuma pushed his sycophants buttons. The hate I see on Free Republic for Ted Cruz, Mark Levin and all the other great conservative leaders remind me of liberal websites. It is disgusting.

Jeff, Thank you very much for your attitude and tones in posting. I always find you respectable, and posts that are thought worthy. Even if there is something I disagree with I always find you so respecting of other Freepers.

I do agree with you here.

I think the question many of us have is the little word "if"... If Donald Trump does what he says on his website that will be good. If he does not , well I won't even go there. In any event just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your tone in comments.

... and yes I too am a avid Cruz supporter.

Keep in mind, all that time he was donating, Trump was not running for anything. He was using politicians to get business done.

I have a bit of a different take on Trump's donations. My impression is that people came to him asking for handouts. Trump didn't seek them out. Everyone likes to key in on the liberal Trump gave money to but leave out all the conservatives he also funded. I wonder if Trump ever turned anyone down? He seems to me like he was an easy mark. Just my thoughts.

I completely agree with this post.

I was banned for the first time in my more than ten year time at FR for criticizing trump as anti conservative

Cruz has been attacked worse than any political figure at FR: both clintons, bush, McConnell, McCain, Romney,

Why are we not allowed to defend our conservative candidate?

Trump supporters are allowed to tell Cruz supporters to shut up and get off FR.

Why?

I am grateful to be back on but this is surreal.

Please know trump supporters that do this. You are not improving his chances.

Cut the Cruz hate.

Moreover, please give us one example of a horrible bill that Teddy actually got killed. As in dead, not merely delayed a few days.

This isn’t conservative affirmative action...He had his chance, he did not lead, and now Trump is

You seem to be suggesting that a true conservative, whatever that is, must have real world skills. In addition to being a true conservative. That's only a real world requirement, not needed on the internet. Unfortunately in the context of getting elected the real world skills appear to belong to Trump. Bernie Sanders too, to some extent, Hillary's incompetence gets some credit.

Don't get elected if people don't vote for you, a candidate has to lead them. Or lose.

Oh, I am not miserable, personally. I do concern with the country that I will leave for my grandchildren. I know quite well what the Left are trying to do, and it is troubling. But, the nonsense that comes from this forum from so called conservatives is another thing. Those of us who have been the voices of conservatism on this forum for 15 years are constantly shouted down and attacked. So, be it. Have your way and live with the consequences.

I once preferred Cruz, and now prefer Trump. There are good solid reasons for that change, and I wouldn't call them "populist"

I wouldn't either. I would call what Trump is proposing "problem solving". Something unheard of in DC. Politicians throw money at problems as a bandaid effect in order to keep the problem alive for their reelection.

I agree with much of what you say. Here we have, on the one hand, Ted Cruz, a brilliant and true social and constitutional conservative. And, on the other hand, there is Donald Trump, a man of low character, boorish behavior, a shallow grasp of the issues, the highest unfavorables ever recorded, a liberal history, and a very questionable claim to be conservative. But he’s ANGRY, and that must account for a lot of his appeal. It is baffling.

>>You are no better than the sycophants that suck up to Obuma.

I’ve been here since Clinton was president. I voted for Reagan in 1980 as a brand new, 18 year old voter and Navy Fireman (E-3).

I’ve watched America change into what it currently is. The America of 1980 and even 1988 is gone. Reagan became president in a nation that was right-of-center. Today, we live in a left-of-center nation. In 1980, people were out of work because the economy was down. Today, they are out of work because the jobs are GONE! Manufacturing-—gone. Service industries—using cheap imported labor. Tech sector—importing H1B labor. Retail—reduced to a few big box stores.

I can see reality for what it is and not what I wish it was. The Reagan of 1980 would be the Trump of today and you would be complaining about how he would start WW3 and ruin the economy.

America will die unless we can get jobs back here. Period. It might take some protectionism. We would win if we could just get some fair trade deals! We need to stop bringing in ready-made welfare recipients who will work for almost nothing. Stop worshiping “free trade” that is really just crony capitalism. Even ObamaCare is actually just a giant handout to the insurance industry.

Trade. Immigration. Jobs. ISIS.

Those are the ONLY things we need to focus on right now for survival. Cruz is a consistent talker. He will talk forever. Talk doesn’t fix sh!t. He can’t even control his own campaign workers, if you choose to believe him.

It is YOU who is the sycophant. You are believing the career politician will do anything other than talk and promise. How many times do you have to get slapped in the face before you stop believing Republican politicians?
