How NASA Will Save the World from Giant, Killer Asteroids
CNN ^ | June 18, 2015 | Matthew Hoye

Posted on 06/19/2015 5:00:23 AM PDT by lbryce

It may sound like a science fiction movie, but in a small conference room at the Goddard Space Flight Center, a tight-knit group of top NASA scientists is coming up with new ways to protect our planet from killer asteroids.

The idea is to repurpose and build on technologies being developed for other space missions.

How big is the threat from asteroids? Well, Jason Kessler, NASA's director of the Grand Challenge, says that as of Wednesday morning asteroid hunters around the world have identified and are tracking 12,706 Near Earth Objects (NEOs) -- or asteroids - that could come close to Earth.

"Of those 1,593 are potentially hazardous, meaning they might cross earth's path," he said.

Another 800 of the total tracked asteroids are a kilometer or more in length. Some of those -- 152 -- also have the potential to cross the Earth's path, something Kessler said would be, "devastating."

"We have discovered about 95% of the one kilometer or larger asteroids, that's roughly the size of the one that is thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs upon impact," he said in an earlier interview with CNN. "Unfortunately we only know about roughly 1% of those asteroids that get down to the 30 meter size, so there's a tremendous amount out there that we have yet to discover."

Between Obama and all the problems he's engendered, including the lousy economy, the budget balloon about to burst, the politically unstable state of the world, those that who are entering the presidential race who haven't got a clue, Global Warming ( I'm only including Global Warming/Climate Change, because it's such a big joke but trying to solve something that doesn't need a solution ends up creating bigger problems, so yes, Global Warming, the belief of it occurring is a cure worse than the disease, thought we had more than enough to worry about.) But now, we find out that up to 152 asteroids in near Earth orbit have the potential to cross the Earth's path, something Kessler said would be, "devastating".

Try to enjoy your lovely morning.

We can rest assured that Obola, Soros, and their elite allies would manage and thrive as their dark plans hatch, never letting a crisis go to waste.

You have a greater chance of being struck by lightning a dozen times in a row than you do of being in an asteroid impact event.

Of course, it could happen. So could the lightning strikes.

How many people recall the Chelyabinsk Meteor from Feb 2013?

Sucker burst over Russia, causing 1000+ calsuaties and massive disruption on the ground.

“And we saw it coming and tried to warn you”, said no astronomer ever.

And that rock was only the approximate size of a Greyhound bus...

I think NASA will try to solve the problem by educating Muslims about the vast and relevant scientific contributions they have made to mankind’s advancement.

Failing that, they will claim the asteroid might solve our global warming problem and just let it all go.

Funny you mention that - there's a YouTube clip out there with government types saying almost that exact thing...

Just tell a jihadist that a population of infidels resides on an approaching asteroid, then send him up there in a rocket with a nuclear bomb.

The _residents Muslim Outreach for NASA could be used by loading all Muslims into a powerful space ship, and launch them into an offending asteroid or comet to deflect it and the Muslims into an orbit that takes the whole kit and kaboodle into the sun.

Allah be praised!

Based on internet accounts, they have about 3 months to figure it out and deploy.

NASA could not save itself. What makes this author think NASA could save the world?

Evidence will be appreciated, thank you.

I subscribe to very few YouTube feeds. One is actually the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center, and 9 out of every 10 videos they post is about man-caused climate change. Ted Cruz needs to lay down the smack. Spaceflight. Not Climatefright.
