A Rutgers nutritional scientist and two cancer biologists at New York City’s Hunter College have found that an ingredient in extra-virgin olive oil kills a variety of human cancer cells without harming healthy cells.
The ingredient is oleocanthal, a compound that ruptures a part of the cancerous cell, releasing enzymes that cause cell death.
Paul Breslin, professor of nutritional sciences in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and David Foster and Onica LeGendre of Hunter College, report that oleocanthal kills cancerous cells in the laboratory by rupturing vesicles that store the cell’s waste.
The findings are published in Molecular and Cellular Oncology.
Scientists knew that oleocanthal killed some cancer cells, but no one really understood how this occurred. Breslin believed that oleocanthal might be targeting a key protein in cancer cells that triggers a programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, and worked with Foster and Legendre to test his hypothesis.
“We needed to determine if oleocanthal was targeting that protein and causing the cells to die,” Breslin said.
After applying oleocanthal to the cancer cells, Foster and LeGendre discovered that the cancer cells were dying very quickly — within 30 minutes to an hour. Since programmed cell death takes between 16 and 24 hours, the scientists realized that something else had to be causing the cancer cells to break down and die.

LeGendre, a chemist, provided the answer: The cancer cells were being killed by their own enzymes. The oleocanthal was puncturing the vesicles inside the cancer cells that store the cell’s waste. These vesicles, known as lysosomes are larger in cancer cells than in healthy cells, and they contain a lot of waste. “Once you open one of those things, all hell breaks loose,” Breslin said.
But oleocanthal didn’t harm healthy cells, the researchers found. It merely stopped their life cycles temporarily — “put them to sleep,” Breslin said. After a day, the healthy cells resumed their cycles.
The researchers say the logical next step is to go beyond laboratory conditions and show that oleocanthal can kill cancer cells and shrink tumors in living animals. “We also need to understand why it is that cancerous cells are more sensitive to oleocanthal than non-cancerous cells,” Foster said.
It will also be interesting to explore the implications of this study for research suggesting beneficial effects of ingesting fullerenes dissolved in olive oil.
According to the World Health Organization’s World Cancer Report 2014, there were more than 14 million new cases of cancer in 2012 and more than 8 million deaths.

THIS is why I must relocate to the Adriatic Sea area. A small island off of Croatia among the olive trees and grape vines is where I belong. Under the beating sun and seashell beaches...dousing my fresh caught fish in olive oil and washing it down with homemade wine.
You are falling for the big government "food pyramid" narrative. The same government that caterwauls about "global warming" while the Great Lakes freeze and New England is buried under 7 feet of snow.
Olive oil is a superfood and one of the healthiest substances you can put in your body.
By the way, so are eggs, which the government has been saying for years is bad for us because they have "cholesterol." The government had housewives in a panic over this, buying "egg beaters" and making omelets with egg whites (sacrilege!). When in fact, eggs are one of nature's most perfect foods.
As well, the government had us all scared of butter and as a result, housewives were buying margarine, which is basically a stick of chemicals and laden with hydrogenated oils which are toxic to our bodies. The switch to margarine from butter had devastating consequences for our health.
There are many things the government tells us that just-are-not-true.
Some research shows that the low-fat diet craze may be what has lead to the explosion of Alzheimer’s.

And the cowboys in my family use olive oil to treat their leather boots, saddles, etc. Works great and is good to eat also. We buy a lot of olive oil and nobody has cancer. That’s pretty rigorous proof it’s good for something. yup.

The bread and salt might not be good for you, but many days I put olive oil in a small bowl, add salt and pepper, and then dip a slice of bread in it, instead of buttering the bread. It’s actually quite good and, given this report, I might even eat it more often from now on.

My favorite salad dressing is just balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil.
Bread usually tastes better with olive oil and Italian seasoning than with butter.
I enjoy the health benefits of olive oil, but that’s not the reason I use it. I just like it better than the alternatives on some things. I still use lard in my biscuits and pie crusts. I gave up potato chips for Lent and I might not survive it.
Why olive oil and not olives?
Occasionally I oil my wooden cutting boards with olive oil. I drench them thoroughly, and it soaks in overnight.

The February, 2015 edition of Reader’s Digest has a story about a man living here since 1943 from Greece who develop cancer and was told he had 9 months. He was in his mid 60’s. He and his wife moved to Greece to an island called Ikaria. He ate all the local foods and drank the local wine.
He lived until 102 and past away in 2013.
He went back to America for a visit years ago to see if the doctors he had could explain it but they were all dead....
