The campaign to separate Scotland from the rest of the UK is in the lead for the first time ahead of the independence referendum later this month, according to a new poll.

A YouGov survey found that the pro-independence campaign, led by the Scottish first minister Alex Salmond, had a two point lead of 51 per cent over the unionists’ 49 per cent.

The poll for the Sunday Times is the latest evidence of a dramatic surge for the Yes campaign, which has seen the campaign recover from a 22 point deficit in just one month.

What does the Scottish/English “Conservative Party” stand for? (I’m curious because I see some weird things happening here in the name of “conservative”.)

German residents who will vote 'Ja' to independence could hold key to breaking up Britain

120,000 EU citizens who live in Scotland can vote on future of the Union

WTF? So UK citizenship means nothing in this vote?

Same sex marriage, socialized medicine, multiculturalism, and the European Union

I'm lost. How, then, can they call themselves "conservative"? "Conservative" is starting to have a confused meaning like the term "liberal" which means lover of liberty, unlike the socialism that "liberals" embrace.

what an independent Scotland is going to use for money

Well if the North Sea oil fields goes with Scotland they could have a good deal of royalty money coming their way.
But I don’t see Britain letting that go without a fight.

Really? Scottish independence would pass in England by a large margin.

The UK's share of North Sea oil production has declined to just over 750,000 barrels a day US Energy Administration - United Kingdom, or less than 1/3 of Venezuela's US Energy Administration - Venezuela.

The Scots would get about 90% of the oil, or gross revenue of £10,000 per capita.

A tidy sum. It will probably take Alex Salmond 10 years to turn Scotland into an economic basket case.

Culloden. And I’m fine and dandy with a border...and charge sixpence on every English pound exchanged in a bank in Scotland. Wendy Woods is smiling.

You get a vote if you are resident in Scotland on the day of the election. It doesnt matter if you have been resident for twenty years or two hours, you get a vote.

Scottish people living in England (mostly Unionists obviously) do not get a vote. English and Welsh people get no say either, even though the breakup of the Union will have seismic cultural, economic and especially political consequences.

Interesting.

Sounds like a remake of the Kansas/Nebraska Act.

How do they determine residency?

Theyve got self-government - they have their own councils, and their own parliament. They have at least as much independence as any US State.

Yes thats the problem. If Scotland goes independent, then they will also go bankrupt, or at least see a massive drop in their wealth and living standards. However, because of North Sea Oil it might take some time for that to happen, and people have short memories. I’m sure the people responsible will have plenty of time to make up their excuses or slither out of the difficulty.

I suspect they take the names off the existing UK electoral register. In spite of the obvious injustice of the situation, I suspect its been done that way because its just easier to administer.

I WISH New England or the north east would go and set their own country up.
There would be millions of socialists leaving the United States

not sure, but millions of socialists could leave the UK , and that for the UK is a good thing.

Not sure why some think Scotland is this nice dreamy land of just Scottish folk who are nice conservative people. Most are socialists who get a say on how England and the rest go forward.

Good riddance to Scotland because they won’t be able to afford their welfare anymore and all those Sots working in the UK will have to leave too and lose their jobs.
