The campaign to separate Scotland from the rest of the UK is in the lead for the first time ahead of the independence referendum later this month, according to a new poll.

A YouGov survey found that the pro-independence campaign, led by the Scottish first minister Alex Salmond, had a two point lead of 51 per cent over the unionists’ 49 per cent.

The poll for the Sunday Times is the latest evidence of a dramatic surge for the Yes campaign, which has seen the campaign recover from a 22 point deficit in just one month.

70% of the Scottish economy involves government spending. They are committing suicide.

Balkanization—big states breaking into smaller weaker states. Big Empires, Unions are breaking into smaller nations. Not really a good thing. If Austria-Hungary had survived it might have kept Hitler from dominence and prevented WW II. Soon another force will be unleased upon the world—an old one that dates back to Sargon I —Imperialism-—big states taking smaller ones and forming super states (Russia is now in this mode—China will also—but so will Brazil, and Others.

5 Million Socialist out of the United Kingdom? Sounds like an English Fantasy. If I were an Englishman I would say don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

That pretty much sums up what my English friend and his wife say.

Tories will never kick out the treacherious Islamic leaches, only UKIP could do this. It would be a bloodbath as well.

34 But once Islam has become the state religion of the newly independent Scotland, the drinking of whiskey will diminish sharply, and the natural inclinations of the Scots people will reassert themselves, providing the world with the most bloodthirsty bunch of pirates the world has ever known, this time working for Allah, rather than the Druids.

Nay. All of the "good" Scots fled Scotland and Northern Ireland when the clan chiefs kicked their crofter peasants off their lands so to maximize sheep husbandry. The Scottish diaspora went round the world with Britannia. The sad bloodlines that remain in Scotland are reminiscent of the French after WWI.

“It will be much easier for the Muzzies to pick them off, since they won’t even have what passes for UK defense systems.”

If, for example, Wyoming seceded, do you think for a minute radical Islamonazis would target that new nation, and, even if they did, those radical Islamonazis would stand a chance? Discuss...

Why do Foreign Nationals get to vote in the USA, or for that matter why do they get to pretend to be president?

Is “Balkanization” as you call it, or Aquinas’ theory of subsidiarity and self-government, bad because the larger tyrannies will overrun the smaller?

Generally, and this is obvious to most of us, greater authority to self-govern smaller enclaves leads to greater freedom. Are you saying we should give up on that idea out of fear?

Scottish Labour is pushing for “no” votes. Americans shouldn’t believe everything they hear from socialist neighbors outside of Scotland.

If the Scots leave the UK, they take the North Sea oil with them.

If the Scottish Members leave the UK Parliament, they will take out about 50 leftist members, and one Tory, leaving the the British Parliament structurally conservative (Tory/UKIP).

If the Scots are gone by 2017, the Brits are much more likely to vote to leave the EU when that vote comes up.

If the Scots are gone, the relative political strength of the anti-immigrant, anti-muslim reaction in the UK will be magnified, likely changing policies.

“Funny; last I heard the Scottish Nationalist Party was solidly in the socialist camp.’

Yep, Scotland is WAY more socialist, so it’s going to be VERY interesting what an independent Scotland is going to use for money, much less other peoples’ money. Scotland is a very poor country, so an independent Scotland is not going to go well at all.

Well if the North Sea oil fields goes with Scotland they could have a good deal of royalty money coming their way.

But I don’t see Britain letting that go without a fight.

I feel bad that being of Scottish decent I haven’t followed this story. My family’s Scottish branch declared their independence from Scotland in the 1800’s when they came to America. I hope it works out well for everyone. I have English ancestors also so I’m in no position to take sides. It does however, make me want to go outside, kneel down and thank God that for whatever choices my ancestors made, I am an American.

That’s what I’m thinking. By confining the socialist Scots to Scotland, the rest of the UK electorate will be more conservative. Plus Scotland will become an object lesson in socialist failure, which could be educational. I’m barely following the whole matter but there does seem to some potential upside if Yes wins.

Having read a number of these threads I am not shocked to find that a number of the names that often grace FR with wholly unconservative positions and support for the GOPe pols —ALSO— are having fits about the Scots taking their self determination and governance into their own hands.

Who would have guessed....

Scottish nationalism (like all the other Celtic nationalisms) is LEFT WING, not conservative.

What is it with American conservatives and Celt-worship???

William Wallace cheering from the grave.

William Wallace was a Leftist???

Maybe if Scotland becomes independent it will give Celtolatrous American "conservatives" an "ancient socialist motherland" they can all move to.

I don't know how accurate Braveheart was, but the Scots seemed to make bad decisions in that movie also.
