64-year-old tub of lard found in Germany -- still edible
AFP/YahooNews ^ | 2/1/12

A German pensioner who had kept a tub of lard in his cupboard for 64 years, took it to authorities who pronounced it very much fit for consumption -- if a little tasteless.

Retired chemist Hans Feldmeier, 87, told AFP he had received the pig fat as a student in 1948 near the northern city of Rostock as part of the post-war US aid programme.

Look up recipes for confit, it’s the same thing.

Preserving meat in fat is actually a very old technique. It’s been used by the French for centuries, and by the Bedouin for even longer.

Thanks! Before reading that book, I had never heard of this as a preservation method!

Note: this topic is from 2/01/2012. Thanks Kartographer. Modern, not ancient, but more or less related to the "bog butter" topic.

All our old bacon fat went to the butcher in WWII. I can remember standing with my eyes at the level of the bottom of the display glass as my mother reached way up and put the saved fat on top for the butcher to forward to the military for production of nitroglycerine. I also remember helping mom preparing Red Cross packages to send to her sister who was married to a German in 1932 and got stuck there for the entire war. Packages with sardines, chocolate, sewing needles, tooth paste, cigarettes, etc. She was finally able to return to the US in 1948.

I agree with your sentiments regarding food in MX.

I was down there back in the early 90’s for 6 weeks. After a period of eating refried beans, I was literally able to scrape the fat off of my back.

There are apparently lots of gall bladder issues down there. No surprise with what is used in the food.

I guess that is where the derogatory term “Greaser” comes from?

Not nice to refer to an elderly couch potato in that manner!

We still do keep a can on the stove, and use it daily.

There’s also a couple of quarts of rendered beef tallow in the fridge: that can’t be beat for French fries.

On the rare nights I’m off and get to make popcorn, I now only use coconut oil. Tastes better IMHO and the wife and MIL agree.
