PRESERVED T. Rex Soft Tissue RECOVERED (Pic)

WASHINGTON — For more than a century, the study of dinosaurs has been limited to fossilized bones. Now, researchers have recovered 70-million-year-old soft tissue, including what may be blood vessels and cells, from a Tyrannosaurus rex.

If scientists can isolate proteins from the material, they may be able to learn new details of how dinosaurs lived, said lead researcher Mary Higby Schweitzer of North Carolina State University.

"We're doing a lot of stuff in the lab right now that looks promising,'' she said in a telephone interview. But, she said, she does not know yet if scientists will be able to isolate dinosaur DNA from the materials.

The soft tissues were recovered from the thighbone of a T. rex, known as MOR 1125, that was found in a sandstone formation in Montana. The dinosaur was about 18 years old when it died.

"The dinosaur was about 18 years old when it died. Soft tissues are rare in older finds. "That's why in a 70-million-year-old fossil it is so interesting,'' he said.

18 ??

What, did he have his ID with him?

Depends on whether you want burgers or barbeque. I prefer mesquite for grills and smokers.

I'll just complete its DNA with frog DNA, that'll make sure it's docile.

Years ago, my college roommate dated a guy who liked Canadian Bacon pizza during the Fall semester. She and I both hated Canadian Bacon, but she pretended to like it for him. They would order these Canadian Bacon pizzas and sit on the living room floor and eat. They broke up by Thanksgiving, and so came an end to the Canadian Bacon pizzas.
The following Fall, we moved to a new apartment, and when we lifted the couch, we saw a pizza box under the couch. We opened it, and sure enough, it was 2 slices from a Canadian Bacon pizza looking as fresh as if it had been from the night before and not the year before. God knows what they put in those ingredients.....

after removing the minerals from the specimen, the remaining tissues were soft and transparent and could be manipulated with instruments. The bone matrix was stretchy and flexible

This is so thrilling! I can't wait for a full analysis and an article in Scientific American.

re: Dino DNA,

And thus we enter into a new era of military warfare know as dino-bots, an armoured and computuerized army of cloned T-Rexes that are joystick driven by remote operators and can wreak havoc on enemy divisions and quell urban uprisings.

A little PCR and Jurassic Park here we come!!!

Yep. It's only a matter of time.

Could a cloned dinosaur survive in a modern atmosphere? Seems I read that CO2 levels are so different now than they were 70 million years ago that it would not be possible for a dinosaur to breath the air for more than a short amount of time.

I could be mistaken. Hope so. There's a little part in the back of my brain that can't help but think it might actually be kinda cool if dinosaurs were running around eating people.
