Folk Mass Band Upset Over Masses Interrupting Their Concerts

Yonkers, NY––Blake Jennings, lead guitarist at St. Therese Parish in Yonkers, New York is outraged over what he calls “years of concerts being interrupted by the Mass.” The 56-year-old accountant and father of three has played with his band at the 9:30 Folk Mass since 2009. “Our fans love us,” Jennings said, after Sunday Mass. “You can see it in their eyes…the way they droop down, lazily closing as we play…as if their entering into some kind of ecstasy. Or the way some in the parish are so moved they just can’t stand another moment of joy, and simply walk out…presumably to get some air.” But according to Jennings, many in the band have been becoming ever frustrated with the frequent interruptions to their concerts. “Father’s always interrupting…always trying to upstage us. First it’s a gospel, then a homily, eventually the words of consecration…there’s always something with this guy.” Jennings has recently begun a petition, and hopes to get 2,000 signatures to send to the diocese.

Blake needs a heavy dose of catechesis. Failing that, he should consider applying to serve at an Evangelical Baptist Church where his musical gifts will be truly appreciated.

Not a new problem.
Similar complaints either way go back to the days of sung and orchestrated Masses (think Mozart and long, long before).

Now Hear This:

"Dueling Banjos" is NOT an appropriate selection for a "Communion Meditation".

That is all.

You do realize that’s a spoof article at a spoof site right?

That's satire, yes?

“Our fans love us,” Jennings said, after Sunday Mass

Hey, Blake: IT AIN’T ABOUT YOU! When you start talking about “fans” in the context of a worship service, it’s time for you to stop playing, do some real soul searching and remember that you are a steward, not the owner, of your talents.

My band, “Grupo Alabare’,” gets away with all kinds of stuff because our pastor doesn’t understand Spanish.

Obviously it got my dander so far up that I spewed before realizing it’s satire.

I HATE when that happens...

That’s a thorough indictment of “Grupo Alabare” AND of your pastor.

I think the new band, Black Sabbath, will fit in better.

It was a joke, in the spirit of the thread regarding not recognizing a satire article.

I confess, though, we play “Amor Eterno” on Mother’s Day, even though it’s not strictly religious, although the theme is missing one’s late mother and seeing her again in Heaven.

Sarcaism or not ~ It is a hoot !
To many folks now go to Church to see others (comunity) ,..and to be seen by others .

People go to Church to worship in fellowship with their God.
The consideration that a band would be more important than their God would be ... blasphemous.

OK.

I am a bit prickly on that topic ... I have grown mightily sick of "ministers of music" who view the Holy Mass as their plaything, and equally sick of spaghetti spined pastors who let them get away with it.

Down with OCP!!!

I agree!

In the spirit of full disclosure, we also played "Nina Bonita" at a Quinceanera (15th birthday) Mass, although it's a pop song about a father's love for a daughter.

Our current pastor doesn't do these services because the observance of the 15th birthday is not a sacrament, although he allows (following Communion, before the final blessing) a bit of time for the presentation of a baby, a 3-year-old, or a 15-year-old daughter, as well as the blessing of household religious articles.

I (personally, I am not the Pope) have no particular objection to the "presentation of a baby" &c in Church, but I would prefer (personally, I am not the Pope) that it be done after the final blessing. It's not part of the Divine Liturgy, respect for which should move us to clearly delineate liturgical acts from non-liturgical acts.

This may seem pecksniffery and pettifigging ... I beg to differ. Disrespect for the Liturgy and for the sacraments has become ingrained in Catholic culture in America over the last 40 years; I think it important that we reestablish it.

I hope this isn't too 'heavy' for an otherwise amusing satire thread.
