Boris Johnsons bid to trigger a general election next month has been blocked by MPs following a string of heavy defeats for the government in both houses of parliament.
The prime minister was thwarted three times in the House of Commons: an attempt by opposition parties and Tory rebels to block a no-deal Brexit easily cleared its second and third readings, and Johnson later failed in his attempt to force a snap general election.
Immediately afterwards, the prime minister called Jeremy Corbyn, the first leader of the opposition in the democratic history of our country to refuse the invitation to an election.
But an early poll seemed increasingly likely after the Labour leader signalled that he would back Johnsons call for a snap poll, but only once the bill opposing a no-deal Brexit bill has passed.
The vote came just 48 hours after the prime minister told the public, I dont want an election, you dont want an election.
The motion he tabled calling for an early poll was supported by 298 MPs, but that fell well short of the two-thirds required, with Labour MPs whipped to abstain.
But Corbyn made clear explicitly that Labour is ready to support a similar motion, once Hilary Benns backbench bill to block a no-deal Brexit has received royal assent, which could happen early next week if it is not scuppered by Tory peers.
Corbyn told MPs, we want an election, because we look forward to turfing this government out. But he claimed Johnsons proposal for a 15 October poll was, a bit like the offer of an apple to Snow White by the wicked queen.
Speaking after the Commons had rushed through Benns bill, which Tory peers are now seeking to block in the House of Lords,

Thanks for the explanation!
Agree the Brits did this to themselves and needed no help from the EU to import muslim invaders.
The Queen always has and always will do what her current prime minister advises. She did it with Thatcher, with Blair and will do with Johnson
1. The rest of the EU cannot do that. Extensions have to be requested by the country invoking article 50. The UK asked twice for an extension and got it.
2. The other 27 countries in the EU now want the UK out. They are too much of a drama queen to keep their membership. Better out is the eu opinion.
3. The Oct 31 deadline can only be extended by the UK by specifically amending their law and specifically requesting it.
The UK will crash out on October 31. That is still 90% sure
The muslims in the UK were imported by the UK from their ex colonies and didn’t come from the continent.
The Muslim problem continues no matter the Brexit outcome
Bojo can also ignore the no deal bill and just delay before the crash out October 31
The lords would need to filibuster only 120 hours using a tag team. Surely they can do this and prevent corwyn from putting the monarchy at risk of a bremainer revenge mob? But It sounds as if corwyn and co. suspect the bill will never get that far. More kabuki?
Thanks SeekAndFind.
Gobbledygook.
99% of yankees have no idea what you just said.
The short version is that the lords could have killed the bill with a filibuster and Johnson can kill it by rrefusig to send it to the queen.
Strangely i do not see any news organizations covering the possibilty that johnson can kill the bill all by himself...
Here is one place that indicates although somewhat vauely that the government can ignore the bill. Hovever it seems to be imho sftpedalled presuming it is the route that bojo will actualy choose...

The remoaners haven’t won. Boris knows exactly what he is doing. He knows that in order to win a general election he must force the remoaners in his party and out of it to show their hands. By defying a three line whip to vote against the bill, he has an excuse to purge the irreconcilable remoaners from the party and by forcing the opposition to vote down a snap election so that they can pass their disgraceful sabotage bill without facing an electoral mandate for it first he can show the voters that it is they who are thwarting Brexit and that he will need that majority mandate to see it through, thus nullifying the threat from the brexit party. The opposition may well get their sabotage bill through parliament, but they will lose the election and he will have the mandate he needs to destroy he remoaner cause once and for all.
She can only veto bills on the advice of her prime minister and she has never done so. Lasttime it happened was in 1708 when Queen Anne vetoed a Scottish militia bill on the advice of hr ministers. The Queen will do whatver Boris instructs her to. It is the Prime Minister who excercises the Queens powers and the Royal Prerogative. The Queen is an expert on the British constitution and will give her PM the benefit of her expertise. It is, paradoxically, the Queen who will advise, and the Prime Minister who makes the decision.
Okay, but the article also says there's a mechanism whereby Parliament can block the PM from doing that.
Do you think they will?
Thank you for posting this. For Americans this is confusing. At least Oliver Cromwell hasnt shown up.
“The opposition are stuffed. The Remainers are stuffed. The EU is stuffed.”
Boris Johnson, to achieve British independence from Brussels, will have to do it in a dramatic, even heroic political struggle.
All the more glory.
That is why men fight bulls.
The elites are in revolt against the people all over the world.
Thanks for that very informative post!
Boris needs to re-open the Tower of London
