Brexit: Boris Johnson faces showdown in Parliament

Boris Johnson faces a showdown in Parliament later after No 10 officials warned he would call for a snap general election on 14 October if MPs succeed in seizing control of Commons business.

Rebel Tories and Labour MPs are planning a bill to stop the UK leaving the EU on 31 October without a deal.

Mr Johnson said he did not want an election, but progress with the EU would be "impossible" if the MPs win.

Jeremy Corbyn said the Labour Party was ready for a general election.

If this election does occur....the only big winner I see is the BREXIT-Party. The Tories won’t be able to get 42-percent of the vote, as they did in 2017. They might be lucky to get 10-percent.

The Labour Party has a problem because a minimum of a third of their typical voters are pro-BREXIT.

But I do agree...a snap-election would resolve a lot of the problems with the existing Parliament.

The only chance he has of getting the EU to stop acting like spoiled three year olds is to make it clear that there’s no way to keep him from walking away except by dealing directly with him. That what he pointed out with today’s comments that the left are undermining his negotiating position. I was surprised he’d lay that out, but I think he felt that was exactly what the anti’s were trying to do, so he’s making sure they take the rap if it happens.

The EU’s going to try every avenue possible to get their way. He’s determined they’re either going to deal fairly, or he’s outta there. This is sort of negotiating 101 when one side’s acting in bad faith.

I’m sure the anti-brexits want a snap election. That will be the redo on the referendum that they have been trying to get all along.

I hope it backfires in their faces.

I don’t see a snap election as solving anything any way. The voting population is still hopelessly divided:

no-deal does not have a majority

no-Brexit does not have a majority

There will be a hung parliament.

In what way are the eu acting like spoiled three year olds?

The UK in March 2017 invoked Article 50 calling for a 2 year period before leaving.

The UK sent in unprepared negotiators and the UK did not confirm with its own parliament the boundaries of negotiations.

The UK got an agreement and then the UK rejected it.

The UK parliament then rejected every single alternative - 8 of them.

The UK then begged twice for an extension of the leave date.

Boris comes on board and has no plans for how to manage the Irish border while keeping it open as per the Good Friday Agreement and he says “we should discuss but I have no idea”.

This is the UK acting as a three year old, undecided of what it wants to do and why

And then you say “the EU’s going to try every avenue possible to get their way”

— what way is that? They want the UK to live up to its promise in the Good Friday Agrement to keep the border open.

Their way is to ensure that Ireland, a member, doesn’t get bullied by the UK.

And you say “deal fairly” — how have they NOT dealt fairly?

Strangely enough both Remain and the Brexit-Farage party want a snap election.

Neither will get what they want. What they will get is a complete disintegration of the 2 party system in the UK. Both the Tories and Labour will be gutted. But no “side” will win an outright majority.

The Tories don’t need a majority or even 42% in first past the post system.

Polls show Tories get a majority of ~25 AFTER remainer Tories have been deselected.

The Result will be a hard Brexit with a deal or more like a no deal Brexit.

Tony Blair and all the Europhiles are trying to stop an election.Because they know they will lose.

The lib dems will also steal a lot of pro-remain votes from Labour as well as the Tories. The result is unpredictable. If Boris goes for unambiguous no-deal Farage has promised to stand down, in which case the Tories would win an outright majority easily.

Just like in the US, the representatives move heaven and earth to subvert the will of the people. Too bad the Tower of London is only a museum now.

Johnson was educated at the European School, Brussels I, Ashdown House, and Eton College. He read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1986.

Nothing like a dyed-in-the-wool public school boy to go around looking like he can't find a comb. P.S. the secret is that he can't find a comb. Never had one. Never will.
