Among Vietnamese, a generational divide arises in fight against deportation threat
LA Times ^ | Dec 2018 | Anh Do

Posted on 12/26/2018 10:29:51 AM PST by CondoleezzaProtege

"After word spread about a renewed push by the Department of Homeland Security to get Vietnam to accept more deportees, some people saw it as a mistake by the Trump administration given the GOP’s fading strength in Orange County and the historical support that the Republican Party has gotten from Vietnamese Americans.

But in a community where many older residents oppose undocumented immigration and younger ones tend to lean left politically, the controversy is just the latest to underscore the generational divide among those of Vietnamese descent."

"More than 8,000 Vietnamese residents in the U.S. who escaped their homeland but later committed crimes — even minor ones for which they have served time — would be at risk of deportation."

"After escaping Vietnam, Am Nguyen, 70, lived in Philippine refugee camps, struggling for eight months, before resettling in California in 1981. She had given birth to her fourth child while housed in the Palawan Island barracks, clinging to hope that officials would allow her family passage to the U.S.

“To be welcomed to America is a privilege,” the Westminster grandmother said. “Once you’re here, you need to follow the rules here. If you violate something that is very serious, you should be deported. They have the right to send you back.”

Nguyen and her South Vietnamese Army veteran husband Hoa Dang, 76, both Republicans, said they are against illegal immigration and support keeping a close watch on the borders “because with terrorism, you have to be careful since you never know who’s going in and out.”

There are STILL Vietnamese who lean left, after all their people have been through??? Good Lord, turn out the lights, we’re doomed.

A now old friend of mine who came in ‘75 as a young teenager failed to get citizenship. He started the process several times.I coached him through one of those efforts. He is a highly paid welder at the shipyard and trains new welders in advanced techniques. He used to also get into bar fights and spend short times in jail which aborted his efforts. When Trump first said he was ready to ship some Vietnamese refugees back who had not got their citizenship Long Lê swore off drinking and bars and is working at Citizenship again. His wife and daughter are Citizens. Maybe he will make it this time.

Leftism is perpetual wishful thinking..... the young are more susceptible to it, although it can persist at any age. There are various kinds of fantasists on the right, too, just look at the people dreaming of a secretive “master plan” that will take down all of Trump’s and America’s enemies. Wishful thinking is especially virulent on the left, but it can strike in myriad forms.

Ironic that Vietnam is becoming an expat haven for retirees from around the world.

The first generation refugees and the first kids born here were/are pretty staunchly anti government and vote Republican. By the third generation here the kids are all ‘educated’ in Public Schools and their parents , being also born here, do not constantly remind them of the horrors of Communism and of corrupt government. They are, in sum, American kids and subject to the school and H’Wood brainwashing The majority of them are still conservative but far too many are what their teachers inculcated in them.

Your friend has been “illegal” since ‘75? And he is highly paid at. US Shipyard?

How is that even possible?

I worked the medical department when the VN refugees were processed at Eglin AFB back in 1975. These people were grateful and humble and have assimilated into the US with pride. They didn't fly the flag of their country and expect anything but a chance to do well.

Total leftist journo bias. After a long litany of anti Trump quotes from a handful of Viet-Americans, they give one single pro-Trump quote in the last paragraph.

And did you notice the stated reason for why there was a big migration of refugees in the 70s from Vietnam to the US? Because of the USAF bombing of Vietnam.

That's right! It was our Air Force that drove the S Vietnamese boat people to escape.

Is that what the Zinn-ized / Chomsky-ized school history classes are teaching these days?

No one wrote the friend was illegal, only that he failed to get citizenship.

I bet he has a green card. (permanent U.S. resident)

Before the fall of the Republic of Vietnam in 1975 there were NO boat people, zero, zip, nada.

It was the horrors of communist rule that drove South Vietnamese to flee by any means possible. Those who made it here were grateful to be alive & in America and the vast majority have been successful productive citizens.

In my local dry cleaner they display the South Vietnamese flag out of nostalgia, not dual loyalty.

So why are these Vietnamese being deported back to communist Vietnam now? Sounds like an Obama practice; pretty much a death sentence intended to punish those who criticize communism.

I’m not inclined to want to send them back to Communist Vietnam.

I don’t think they’d get a very nice welcome from Vietnam.

For whatever reason, a lot of Freepers don’t understand the difference between citizenship and permanent residency (green card). As you obviously know (but I will state for the thread) a permanent resident may live, work, pay taxes, collect SS (if they paid in) for their entire lifetimes, with no requirement to obtain citizenship if they do not so desire. Of course, they cannot vote or hold federal office, and can still be deported or lose their status for committing certain crimes or staying abroad too long, but this is not a problem for many, many people.

I’ve seen this too. Younger Vietnamese are very liberal, even though their families are traditional. I witnessed on young girl (maybe 20) gush about transsexuals, of all things. The kicker is she was a very smart engineering student.

Not sure about that. Vietnam has changed a lot. Many Vietnamese families make yearly trips between the US and Vietnam for 1-2 months at a time.

Tung Nguyen, 40, a Santa Ana activist who has served time in prison and helped lead protests in Little Saigon.

So Tung Nguyen, probably a permanent green card holder, was suckered into becoming an activist and committing crimes which could probably lead to revocation of status and deportation if arrested in the future. Getting arrested and convicted multiple times happens to a lot of activists. Usually too late they realize they were just used, by then they've lost eligibility for student loans, can't get a job, and the non-citizens are probably eligible for instant deportation with no second chances (whereas before they could have been naturalized). Meanwhile the community organizers are in the schools brainwashing the next generation into dupes and actively suppressing any opposition. It's a pointless tragedy.

My son's in-laws live in Vietnam 6 months out of the year. The father served in Vietnam and met the mother there (she is Vietnamese). After raising 2 kids in Michigan, they bought a place in Vietnam and enjoy their time there. They still live in Michigan from April to October

I actually visited Vietnam in October, myself (Hanoi and Ha Long bay) and was amazed at what a beautiful country it is, how nice the people were and how CHEAP everything is. Dinners for 4 of us with bottles of beer and water would be $12 total. You can get spoiled in a hurry with that cost of living.

You are right on.

Expats from around the world have retired to:

Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Panama, etc., where you can live quite well on Social Security alone.
