“and only one piece of debris has been identified as coming from the plane, a slab of wing that washed ashore on Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean last July.”

I did not hear it was ever definitively identified as such.

Spokesman:

“I urge the media and the public not to speculate because it will give undue pressure to the loved ones of the victims of MH370,” he said”

Umm ok, I guess there could be a few family members whom still think their loved ones are hold up on some deserted Island waiting to be rescued.

It was finally identified as a definite piece of the missing aircraft.

“The French prosecutor said a technician from Airbus Defence and Space (ADS-SAU) in Spain, which had made the part for Boeing, had formally identified one of three numbers found on the flaperon as being the serial number of the plane.”

I also did not know that Airbus made parts for a Boeing aircraft.

Certainly looks like a piece off of a plane. But probably not the missing Malaysian plane.

Airbus is more a conglomerate of contractors than just a stand alone manufacturer.

Their various contractors make many aviation related products that are found on more than just Airbus branded aircraft. Boeing does the same thing.

According to some news sources the piece is most likely from a Japanese H-II rocket used to launch satellites.

You don’t have to make them to have part number cross overs for repair purposes. For instance, I can look up the part number for a Boeing as well as Airbus, Cessna, Beech. Same thing on automobiles.

AirAsia Flight 8501 crash site in the Java Sea was not that far from Thailand. If this is from an Airbus A320, well......
