Major Breakthrough In Finding Malaysia Airlines MH370
Forbes ^ | 04/09/2014 | Bruce Dorminey

In a major break in a race against time, searchers for MH370 have detected two new electronic pings — both received in the last 24 hours — from what they hope is the missing Boeing BA +1.23% 777-200’s black box flight data recorders. The news was announced at a Wednesday morning press conference in Perth.

“I’m now optimistic that we will find the aircraft; what’s left of the aircraft,” Retired RAAF Air Marshal Angus Houston told reporters.

Just days before batteries on the black box pingers are expected to expire, Australian authorities leading the southern Indian Ocean search for the Malaysia Airlines 777 confirmed that Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield had, in fact, detected two new pings in the current northernmost search area; or some 1500 km (930 mi) northwest of Perth.

The U.S. Navy’s TPL-25 Towed Pinger Locator sonar, now deployed on the Ocean Shield, has been operating 24 hours a day at depths of up to 9000 ft. Thus far, it has detected four separate ping events; two on April 5th and two on April 8th local time.

The most recent signals detected by the ocean shield were consistent with what you would expect from a black box held for a little more than five minutes, Seventh Fleet spokesman Cmdr. William Marks told Forbes.com.

“It’s a continuous pinging, with pings at one-second intervals,” Marks said by phone from aboard the U.S.S. Blue Ridge. “Our sonar can pick it, but it’s not audible to the human ear.”

Marks says the pingers attached to the two separate black boxes — a cockpit voice recorder and a separate flight data recorder — each give out separate continuous signals until they run out of battery life, which by some estimates could be any day now.

What if some group hijacked the plane and had some black boxes they dumped into the ocean to monitor the search techniques?

Why do I find the fact that the Chinese found the ping, funny?

Chinese success not surprising since Americans are castrated under the Zero regime..

Was this jet 'LOST' on purpose as a way to KEEP PUTIN'S TAKEOVER OF UKRAINE OUT OF THE NEWS?

There were 2 Ukrainians and 1 Russian on this flight. Also, I am suspicious of the Iranian kid as well who said something about "a bad turn" on his FB account shortly before he deleted his account.

A couple of questions that have occurred to me:

1. Is there no coding on the Pings to allow the identificatin of the aircraft? Seems odd if not. Slight variations in the ping rate and/or duration would do the trick I would think. Or some sort of modulation or frequency offset.

2. How do they effect geolocation? Seems hard unless you have multiple hits from different locations.

occam’s razor

I got a beard, I don't shave.

My competing hypotheses is that the only proof is a missing plane, so they say. No hard proof has been found so therefore it was flown to Pakistan for a terror strike on Israel!/s

I’ve always thought the plane crashed into the ocean, but if I were a terrorist leader with aspirations to hijack an airliner, the very first thing I would have thought of is to plant a false trail of breadcrumbs to lead everyone to look elsewhere. And real terrorist leaders are probably smarter than me ;-)

The honest truth is I will not believe anything they say no matter what. Everything out of the D of C is dishonest, deceitful and disgraceful.

“The U.S. Navy’s TPL-25 Towed Pinger Locator sonar”

And U.S. technology proves critical to the world once again. Good thing this wasn’t a Malaysian Pinger Locator or it might be pointing at catfish farms in Alabama by now.

The real terrorists are studying the search and figuring ways to mislead even farther next time.

“Just days before batteries on the black box pingers are expected to expire,”

This may or may not be accurate. A friend worked for the Public Utilities Commission. They were required to change the battery in their chlorimeter every week, whether they used it or not. Every few months he’d give me a bag of batteries. Each one would last me 9 months or so in my same model chlorimeter. And I did 4 tests a day to his maybe once a week. So they may last longer than is being reported.
However,,,,,, I did read that they were supposed to have been changed a year and a half ago, but weren’t. If that is true,,, they could run out at any time, but there’s no way anyone can tell just when that will be.

I have watched Mr. Angus Houston give press conferences. He stikes me as a person who wouldn't say shit if he had a mouthtful of it.
For him to sound this optimistic I feel he has additional confirmatory info not made public. - tom
