Brokered conventions - very simplified (vanity)
Multiple links in body of thread | December 12, 2015

What is a brokered convention?

A candidate must secure a majority - not just a plurality - of votes prior to the convention. If a candidate has not secured a majority of votes prior to the convention, then there will be a first ballot at the convention. Delegates must vote to their pledged candidate on the first ballot. If after the first ballot, there is still no majority, then the convention becomes brokered. At this time, the delegates are released from their pledges and the deal making begins.

The last GOP brokered convention was in 1948. The last Democratic brokered convention was in 1952.

Before primaries became the norm, brokered conventions happened often.

Once primaries, with their winner-take-all formula became the norm, brokered conventions went away.

The Democratic party did away with winner-take-all primaries in 2008, forcing all states to have proportional primaries.

In the case of the Republicans, they have both winner-take-all and proportional primaries.

In the 2016, the proportional primaries will be held first. Then the winner-take-all primaries will be held. Those will be the larger states in number of delegates.

Winner-take-all vs proportional

I posted a thread on this a few days ago mentioning I saw a smirking Fox consultant type saying Trump’s 35% was “less than 50%” and “they only have to vote for their candidate on the first ballot.”

THIS is why Trump has made it clear that he’d go third party if he had to.

In many ways, a brokered convention seems to make sense because delegates from a winner take all state that we early in the season may be ruled by voters that were caught up in hype or the media buzz of the day. Once they are released and free to vote their choice things could sort themselves out fairly.

Some say a brokered convention is a workshop for corruption. I'd like to learn about examples of how the Karl Roves of the world bight work this to their advantage.

On the 135th ballot, Bob Dole will win the nomination.

That's why all these losers are staying in the race. I guess in a way it's fair, may the best man/woman win whatever but in another view, it's just more piling on by the bully GOPe. How the hell did we get here with our own party?

Don’t count out George Herbert Walker Bush. He’s still eligible, he only served one term.

Ok, help me out here. The Election is when? Everyone’s delegate count is zero.

Thanks. I suppose there’s no need to panic about a brokered convention, yet. lol

Exactly.

That’s why the 2-5% people are staying here. No telling what kind of deal they could cut for their few points.

I doubt that there will be a brokered convention. But I’ve been wrong before - many times.

First of all, I saw the smirking consultant too .. and I was none to pleased with their actions; and I considered it juvenile and high school stuff.

We got here with our own party because we didn’t put up enough fuss when they misbehaved. We should have started a fuss a long time ago.

Establishment Republicans only want Socialist loser nominees. They’re happy with Communist Democrats in the White House and prefer them to actual reformist Conservatives.

To wit, since 1928, only 3 times has there been a Conservative nominee:
Hoover, 1928 & 1932 - “Progressive ex-Dem”
Landon, 1936 - Establishment RINO
Willkie, 1940 - “Roosevelt Dem turned RINO liberal”
Dewey, 1944 & 1948 - Establishment liberal
Eisenhower, 1952 & 1956 - Establishment RINO
Nixon, 1960 - Establishment Moderate
Goldwater, 1964 - Libertarian/Conservative
Nixon, 1968 & 1972 - Establishment Moderate
Ford, 1976 - Establishment RINO
Reagan, 1980 & 1984 - Conservative
GHW Bush, 1988 & 1992 - Establishment Moderate
Dole, 1996 - Establishment Moderate
Dubya Bush, 2000 & 2004 - Establishment Moderate
McCain, 2008 - Disgruntled left-leaning RINO (who almost switched to Dem in 2004)
Willard, 2012 - Socialist RINO (lifelong left-winger)

I'm no expert, but suppose it ends up like this: Trump 45%, Cruz 35%, Carson 10%, Rubio 10%.

A Rove-type would have to go to those last three, and get them to throw their delegates all to one compromise GOPe candidate. Promises would have to made to those three. Perhaps one gets the VP slot, the other two get very lucrative "consultant" contracts.

I can't see Cruz or Carson being bought out. But then again, I suppose every man has his price.

That won't be necessary -- except for the DNC's meme-builders and consent manufacturers.
