The Center for American Progress is recommending 13 new gun policies to the White House some of them executive actions that would not require the approval of Congress in what amounts to the progressive communitys wish list.
CAPs recommendations, presented Friday to White House officials and detailed in an 11-page report obtained by The Washington Post, establish a benchmark for what many in Obamas liberal base are urging him to do after last months massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
CAPs proposals which include requiring universal background checks, banning military-grade assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and modernizing data systems to track gun sales and enforce existing laws are all but certain to face stiff opposition from the National Rifle Association and its many allies in Congress.
On Monday, Tanden will moderate a public discussion with three Democrats who have played leading roles in the gun debate: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who during the Clinton administration helped get the 1994 assault-weapons ban passed; Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.), who helped write that bill as a House member; and Rep. Mike Thompson (Calif.), who chairs the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
One of CAPs suggestions to toughen federal regulation of gun sales is to make the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is currently an agency within the Department of Justice, a unit of the FBI. CAP says absorbing the ATF into the FBI would better empower the ATF to combat gun crime and illegal trafficking.

“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
— Thomas Jefferson
Maybe they could start with Chicago?
The 2nd Amendment is not negotiable.
I am not a criminal. I have the right to protect my family, myself and my property from a criminal or from government.
Democrats want to make criminals out of the citizens of this country. The only thing they know is the use of force by making laws to criminalize citizens. They label those laws to make them sound good and for your benefit.
This is a fraud.
In 1994, Sen. Dianne Feinstein stated that if she had the votes, she would take all the guns from citizens. She conveniently had a complete gun-registration law and ban of hundreds of guns to submit the day after the last shooting.
U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric Holder has stated we have to do the same thing with the guns that we did to smoking.
All of these people have taxpayer-funded security around them.
There is only one reason to ban guns, and that is Democrats and Obama want to disarm citizens. It does not make the children or the public safer. But it makes it easier to use force in making the public comply with their whims.
Now Obama is going to issue an executive order to ban guns. Can anyone say dictatorship?
only criminal the fibbies ever really went after in Chicago was John Dillinger ~ the others were taken out by the Treasury Department ~ lot of psycho babble in the rationale for all that stuff.
It must feel sooo good to be a liberal.
A liberal never lets facts interfere with his theories.
Entire agenda is nationalist socialist gun-grabbing socialism, setting up FBI DEA Gestapo to enforce blatantly unconstitutional criminal and treasonous action by the executive branch - using the same ATF that used taxpayer cash from DEA informants to illegally buy AK 47s and transport them to Sinaloa cartel narcotraficante operatives in Mexico, who used them to murder US agents, border patrol, and thousands of Mexicans officials and citizens.
THESE ARE KNOWN CRIMINAL ELEMENTS WITHIN THE GOVERNEMT ADVANCING A HOSTILE ARMED GOVERNMENT IN OPPOSITION TO FREEDOMS OF THE CITIZENRY.
How is this different from , say, Pol Pot in Cambodia Killing Fields?
They know they need to move ATF into another agency because of Fast and Furious. Look for some rebranding as well, but a turd by any other name still smells like poop. ATF only came over from Treasury 10 years ago so there will still be some people at FBI that won’t want to be thrown in with them. It will be a very rocky merger without even taking into account Fast and Furious.
I'm willing to compromise. I say we disband the BATFE. They were thugs looking for a home from the start.

sounds like a good idea to me
I’m sure home-schooling was first on the list... /sarc

These groups can propose all they want but it will NOT pass! They keep trying to pass laws to prevent law abiding citizens from owning weapons but they continually run up against the Second Amendment and Public outcry. They can just go pound sand as far as I am concerned.
These anti-gun activists constantly try to edge their way into to all gun ban that they actually hope for but it will not happen in this generation nor probably the next. I do fear that with all the propaganda that is being espoused in public schools that the future may change. Hope that our children have a better understanding of the subject and the possible outcomes of Government control of firearms. Teach your children folks...
I love how the names leftists choose for their organizations are almost always the exact opposite of their active goals.
SSDD: Tear up the Constitution, and Utopia is ours.
Bah...
Disband most acronym agencies period... We ‘need’ an FBI/CIA/Defense and SocSec working to phase itself out over time without screwing people.
That’s my idea of compromise.
No BATFE/Energy/EPA/misEducation/Interior/Labor.
For a start. Then disband about another 75 percent of what remains.
Then get serious about returning to Constitutional principles. And yes, I am serious ;)

CAPs proposals which include requiring universal background checks, banning military-grade assault weapons
The group also suggests requiring firearms dealers to report to the federal government individuals who purchase multiple semiautomatic assault rifles within a five-day period.
Am I missing something here? They want to ban an item then require reporting on purchases of that same item?
