Sweeping new gun laws proposed by influential liberal think tank (Center for American Progress)
Washington Post ^ | January 12, 2013 | Philip Rucker

Posted on 01/12/2013 7:03:20 PM PST by Seizethecarp

The Center for American Progress is recommending 13 new gun policies to the White House — some of them executive actions that would not require the approval of Congress — in what amounts to the progressive community’s wish list.

CAP’s recommendations, presented Friday to White House officials and detailed in an 11-page report obtained by The Washington Post, establish a benchmark for what many in Obama’s liberal base are urging him to do after last month’s massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

CAP’s proposals — which include requiring universal background checks, banning military-grade assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and modernizing data systems to track gun sales and enforce existing laws — are all but certain to face stiff opposition from the National Rifle Association and its many allies in Congress.

On Monday, Tanden will moderate a public discussion with three Democrats who have played leading roles in the gun debate: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who during the Clinton administration helped get the 1994 assault-weapons ban passed; Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.), who helped write that bill as a House member; and Rep. Mike Thompson (Calif.), who chairs the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

One of CAP’s suggestions to toughen federal regulation of gun sales is to make the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is currently an agency within the Department of Justice, a unit of the FBI. CAP says absorbing the ATF into the FBI would better empower the ATF to combat gun crime and illegal trafficking.

The 2nd Amendment is not negotiable.

I am not a criminal. I have the right to protect my family, myself and my property from a criminal or from government.

Democrats want to make criminals out of the citizens of this country. The only thing they know is the use of force by making laws to criminalize citizens. They label those laws to make them sound good and for your benefit.

This is a fraud.

In 1994, Sen. Dianne Feinstein stated that if she had the votes, she would take all the guns from citizens. She conveniently had a complete gun-registration law and ban of hundreds of guns to submit the day after the last shooting.

U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric Holder has stated we have to do the same thing with the guns that we did to smoking.

All of these people have taxpayer-funded security around them.

There is only one reason to ban guns, and that is Democrats and Obama want to disarm citizens. It does not make the children or the public safer. But it makes it easier to use force in making the public comply with their whims.

Now Obama is going to issue an executive order to ban guns. Can anyone say dictatorship?

Entire agenda is nationalist socialist gun-grabbing socialism, setting up FBI DEA Gestapo to enforce blatantly unconstitutional criminal and treasonous action by the executive branch - using the same ATF that used taxpayer cash from DEA informants to illegally buy AK 47s and transport them to Sinaloa cartel narcotraficante operatives in Mexico, who used them to murder US agents, border patrol, and thousands of Mexicans officials and citizens.

THESE ARE KNOWN CRIMINAL ELEMENTS WITHIN THE GOVERNEMT ADVANCING A HOSTILE ARMED GOVERNMENT IN OPPOSITION TO FREEDOMS OF THE CITIZENRY.

How is this different from , say, Pol Pot in Cambodia Killing Fields?

They know they need to move ATF into another agency because of Fast and Furious. Look for some rebranding as well, but a turd by any other name still smells like poop. ATF only came over from Treasury 10 years ago so there will still be some people at FBI that won’t want to be thrown in with them. It will be a very rocky merger without even taking into account Fast and Furious.

I'm willing to compromise. I say we disband the BATFE. They were thugs looking for a home from the start.

These groups can propose all they want but it will NOT pass! They keep trying to pass laws to prevent law abiding citizens from owning weapons but they continually run up against the Second Amendment and Public outcry. They can just go pound sand as far as I am concerned.

These anti-gun activists constantly try to edge their way into to all gun ban that they actually hope for but it will not happen in this generation nor probably the next. I do fear that with all the propaganda that is being espoused in public schools that the future may change. Hope that our children have a better understanding of the subject and the possible outcomes of Government control of firearms. Teach your children folks...

Bah...

Disband most acronym agencies period... We ‘need’ an FBI/CIA/Defense and SocSec working to phase itself out over time without screwing people.

That’s my idea of compromise.

No BATFE/Energy/EPA/misEducation/Interior/Labor.

For a start. Then disband about another 75 percent of what remains.

Then get serious about returning to Constitutional principles. And yes, I am serious ;)

From the article:

CAP’s proposals — which include requiring universal background checks, banning military-grade assault weapons

The group also suggests requiring firearms dealers to report to the federal government individuals who purchase multiple semiautomatic assault rifles within a five-day period.

Am I missing something here? They want to ban an item then require reporting on purchases of that same item?

We need Defense. I would prefer a Department of War, as we used to have, but we at least have to have a Department of Defense.

For the rest, I'd say apply a Constitutional test. Is it clearly spoken about in Art 1, Sec. 8? No? See ya!

We'd take a hit for a month or two on unemployment, but would the economy ever take off...

OF interest to me, watching from a distance, is to see how they play this out. I think they will be saying they have no intention to deny you a constitutional right to own or buy a gun but
a) They will want more regulation and records kept.
b) They will limit what sort of weapon you can own.

Look to what happened in Australia. People think we cannot own guns here - that is not true. We are very limited in what guns we can own (i.e nothing automatic) and, how we store them i.e. gun safes must be used and ammo kept in a different place than the gun(s). Other rules also apply.

This is what I believe Holder and Obama are looking at. The spirit of your constitution, I believe, would not limit the type or size of gun or put any other regulation on it. This lot might be looking at a reinterpretation of the the law- allowing you certain guns but not others and weighing you down with draconian rules associated with gun ownership.

Let subjugate them to OUR end game, DUST!
"COMPROMISE" is a DIRTY word!
People who study the Bible know that COMPROMISE almost always leads to destruction.

It's time to mock the "Gun Control" Zombies!
"Gun Control" is a firm grip, steady breathing, accurate aim (developed by lots of practice), and a slow trigger pull.

The Swiss have got it CORRECT !
We need to learn from the Swiss and implement their "gun control measures" here in the United States right now, today!
These laws are the ones we should shove into the "2nd Amendment Haters" faces.

The Swiss have got it CORRECT !
Let's adopt THEIR LAWS !

Remember: Read Second Amendment: It’s Not About Hunting, IT'S ABOUT TYRANNY .

In 1800 a Jefferson supporter for President,Reverend John Leland was so happy after his election he had his flock celebrate the event by producing the largest cheese the world had ever seen.Every man and woman who owned a cow was to give all the milk on a certain day, only no federal cow was to give a drop.
When the cheese dried it weighed 1600 pounds,it took three weeks to drive it to Washington, all the country had heard of the big cheese and came out to to look at it as it drove along.
The massive cheese had Jefferson’s favorite motto etched into it “Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God”.
Interestingly Lelands visit to the White House occurs on Jan.1,1802,the same day Jefferson wrote the letter to Lelands fellow Baptists assuring them that because of “separation of church and state”they had nothing to fear fRom government limiting their religious practices or expressions.

Heck - wait until they decide to fold every agency into the IRS - everyone is guilty with no possibility of proving innocence because if such an "innocence loophole" can be found, a new law will be put in place to negate it. Punishment varies from having all your accumulated wealth stolen up to death.
