Mitt's Royal Slam (If you only read one political editorial today, make it this one)
American Thinker ^ | October 30, 2012 | J.R. Dunn

Posted on 10/30/2012 1:50:48 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

What's the explanation for Mitt Romney's unparalleled breakout? A few weeks ago, the Romney campaign was regarded as dead in the water. The polls (with the exception of Rasmussen) had the campaign uniformly down, giving Obama up to half a dozen points. Voter interest was phlegmatic at best. A combined Chicago-media offensive appeared to have put Romney on the ropes. The consensus was that Obama would cruise to another victory, one paralleling and perhaps even exceeding his triumph over John McCain four years ago.

Today, little more than an electoral-cycle heartbeat later, the situation is utterly reversed. The big mo belongs to Romney. The polls, excepting a few weird left-wing holdouts of the Reuters variety, show Romney with comfortable leads ranging from 2% to 5%. The swing states are trending in his direction. The expectations of the GOP are those of the 3rd Army roaring into the Reich. As for Obama, he has displayed every sign of a man on the run -- desperation moves, incipient hysteria, vast and expensive efforts to magnify minor Romney gaffes, appeals to Big Bird and Gloria Allred. His expression in the debates was that of a man facing his karma, more haggard and haunted with each appearance. At least one person in the campaign knows full well that the game is up.

This remarkable turnaround is unmatched in recent American political history, and as such, it requires an explanation. Not many have been floated as of yet. The most popular so far holds that Anne and Tagg Romney, acting as Mitt's consiglieres, pushed aside most the campaign's professional political operatives in a successful effort to encourage "Mitt to be Mitt."

Everyone involved denies that anything of the sort occurred, and that may well be the truth...

I would have voted for him 6 months ago, true, just to get Obama out. I have to say watching the first debate was a HUGE relief that Mitt truly understands the issues and could convey them despite the media attacking him without mercy. Whatever was thrown at him he matter of factly batted out of the park with a solid answer! He didn’t go McCain soft on Obama in all three debates!!!

He GOT my vote already!

Astute article.

I especially enjoyed the discussion about the “47%” video. You know the 0bama campaign is gnashing its collective teeth about having to pull that rabbit out of the hat prematurely. Had things gone according to plan, they would have whipped it out sometime after the last debate (or maybe the first one, to change the subject of 0 bombing so badly), and let their minions in the media (you know, the ones who can't be bothered to cover Benghazigate) ring the clarion call from the CBSNBCCNN towers.

It just didn't work out that way. Sorry David.

btw, have people noticed that Obama’s campaign has been to duplicate the Romney campaign and pretend Obama is a free market, middle class loving conservative or at least moderate?

But it’s not believable in Obama, just like Mondale in the tank.

I've noticed. The Won is like a sci-fi chameleon creature. He becomes whatever he needs to be to fool the masses.

(It was Dukakis in the tank.)

...regardless of the purity of his conservative creds (which are not that great, in my book) I respect him tremendously for his business acumen.

What's interesting about J.R. Dunn's article, is that he looks at both Romney and Obama from outside the lens of politics altogether, and instead focuses on their relative strengths and weaknesses as players in a large and complex game.

Nowhere does he mention where either man sits on the political spectrum. In focusing on their experience, knowledge, attitudes, and ability to properly read an opponent, then develop and execute an offensive strategy, he lays bare Obama's utter unsuitedness to not only a large and structured personal battle, but the duties and responsibilities of the presidency itself.

Altogether, it's a brilliant piece, I think.

” Romney is very fortunate in one thing only - he has a despicable opponent that this nation can hardly wait to kick out of office. “

And Obama was horrible in the first debate. That finished him off.

IMO, all this stuff is overrated.

Elections are about fundamentals.

Good economy: incumbent wins

Bad economy: challenger wins (provided he is a plausible alternative, which Romney most certainly is)

I think it’s simple. Obuma showed himself as a sneering, 50 IQ Marxist with dead, black eyes and no soul or heart.

Yes, and it's disgusting. I'd have far more respect for an Obama who sold liberalism unashamed under an honest label, rather than calling it conservatism.

All good points, and true with voters who actually pay attention to issues. However, for low information, short attention span voters who will decide the election he has done two other things:

The net effect has been to drive Romney's personal connection with voters way up, and 0bama's way down. Many soft-headed voters now see what we've seen all along: that 0bama is petulant, egotistical, intellectually light-weight and emotionally weak.

For one thing I distrusted the early polls figuring they were overweighting Dems. For another the media made sure news about Romney remained in the rear and negative. So even though I favored Romney before the debates, the debates helped expose Romney to the public. And they saw he didn't have horns on his head and didn't slobber down his chest. In short, the more people saw Romney compared to Obama, the better Romney looked. I think the five percent or more of the white voters who voted for Obama because he was the first black have regretted it and are now making the correct choice.

Incidentally, I was at a Ryan appearance in La Crosse, Wisconsin today. And even though I didn't shake his hand, I shook the hand of his wife, his brother, Tommy Thompson, and Reince Preibus. No campaigning ...Ryan just shook a few hands. So there.

Folks, the economy sucks. College graduates from last year can’t find jobs. Gasoline prices are obscene. It is costing me over $50 to fill up my small car. Prices are going up. Anyone would be a fool to vote for Obama and 4 more years of this. Plus Uncle is sticking his snoot into everything.

I mostly agree with this. I think it was pretty close at one point, but the underlying reality is that the majority of Americans who aren't news junkies are paying enough attention to know that they very badly want a new President. Romney convinced them he was a safe choice.

That was essentially the same dynamic in 1980. Voters really wanted to dump Carter; but until Reagan destroyed the myth that he was a right-wing crazy they weren't ready for him. The contrast is nearly as stark now: Romney is no Reagan, but 0bama is Carter on steroids.

It depends, like everything else, on what the actual objective is.

I was saying four years ago that the odds are that a random black person picked out of the phone book would be a better president than Barack would be. If he had been a different color, people would be laughing their heads off at "Mr. Teleprompter" the political equivalent of Milli Vanilli. (And Milli at least mimed a better act.)

I never bought the idea that anybody can and will win against 0bama. That’s wishful thinking on our part. The country is divided, and the media is fully behind 0bama. Any opponent will have to work hard to convince the independents and moderates on both parties that he/she is a good alternative for 0bama.

Romney runs a systematic, mature, and discipline campaign. That he’s not a pure conservative, ideologically, only concern the conservatives.

The article is on how he campaigns. It is not on how he will govern.

Correct. And as I posted elsewhere on this thread, it’s the same dynamic: America very much wants a new President. The challenger just has to prove he isn’t the nut-case that his opposition has painted him to be.

Gas prices are a whole nother intrigue. In nominal dollars oil is not twice the price that it was when GWB left office, yet gas is. And funny, nobody’s been beating up on “big oil” about it either. I get the idea that environmental rules, whether real or feared, have been keeping the competition down in the refinery biz — kind of a government forced oligopoly.

Check this Facebook post I got:

I do not talk politics, and I am not here to endorse anyone, but I have to say it---Hurricane Sandy is pummeling the east coast and where are the presidential candidates? Romney is out west, Ryan is in Florida (which the storm has already bypassed) and President Obama, he flew back from Florida and is in DC helping evacuate people from nursing homes. Just saying...I think more of a man who cares about helping people in a crisis than someone who runs from the storm. Everyone complains about the job The President has done in the past 4 years, but in a lot of that his hands were tied by congress. Let's look at something else, Romney has already said he would abolish planned parenthood, did you also know he wants to abolish all forms of protections. So not only will we have children out there who are unwanted and not cared for, but also, without the use of condoms, the spread of disease. What is wrong with this picture? He has also made statements that make women feel like 2nd class citizens and they should be at home and not part of the working force. This is the 21st century, not 1950's!

This is what we're up against.
