Rove makes Akin murder joke

In a closed-door fundraiser at the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove reportedly joked about the murder of Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin.

“We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!” joked Rove, according to a Businessweek report of the fundraiser.

Sheelah Kolhatkar, an editor for Bloomberg Businessweek, was invited to the event as a guest of top Republican donor who was aware she was a journalist. The invite gave her a behind-the-scenes look at the otherwise-private event.

At the event, Rove urged attendees to urge Akin to get out of the race, citing Missouri’s Senate race as a major obstacle to Republicans taking over the Senate.

“We have five people who are interested” in replacing Akin as the Senate candidate, Rove said. “We don’t care who the nominee is, other than get Akin out.”

Rove and other top Republicans called on Akin to leave the race after his controversial comments two weeks ago on “legitimate rape” and his mistaken comment about how conception through rape rarely occurs.

I am praying for Todd Akin. I think what was done to him was underhanded and dirty, and as much as I despised the gop e before, I loathe and have nothing but contempt for them them now. THIS is exactly what they did with murkowski in Alaska so a true CONSERVATIVE would lose. And make no mistake, they would rather have mccaskill than a straight up Conservative who would puncture their balloons.
I hope Akin wins and wins big. I would make a fortune at the duct tape concession.

Rove reportedly said, in addition to the murder joke, some things he did not consider a joke that are incredibly sinister:

At the event, Rove urged attendees to urge Akin to get out of the race, citing Missouri’s Senate race as a major obstacle to Republicans taking over the Senate.

“We have five people who are interested” in replacing Akin as the Senate candidate, Rove said. “We don’t care who the nominee is, other than get Akin out.”

I'm really interested in who the "we" is that Rove refers to. (The GOP-E, some elitest group, Rove & his Mom???) This is a fundraiser, and he is speaking to those who could potentially help fund Akin.

Sometimes it's nice to catch a glimpse of the smoky back room.

Goldberg`s thinking is that once they drop the pro life Christian family values platform, they will do just fine between Rep establishment and Democrat cross overs, or cross dressers whatever.

Good point. I can see how Rove and the rest of the GOPe look down their nose at conservatives as the fringe of the fringe.

Not funny, Rove. I’m not Akins biggest fan, but... yeesh.

Remember — Rove’s candidate for President is Romney.

The Republican Establishment hates social conservatives.

I pretty much agree with your analysis and would apply it to the MSM in general, so I don’t see this as any different that abc, cbs, nbc, cnn, upi, ap, etc., etc.

Nonetheless, in the context of asking to get rid of Todd Akin, this is not just a joke but it is a dangerous joke.

Another ignorant statement that reveals a lot about the mentality of Rove and his cronies:

“We don’t care who the nominee is, other than get Akin out.”

They’d put up a candidate to the left of McCaskill if it meant getting rid of Akin. I wonder why they don’t just come out and endorse McCaskill, after all, that’s effectively what they are doing right now.

What I find remarkable is how so many FReepers can be so vocal in their hatred of the GOP-E in general, and Romney in particular, and yet be fully supportive of the GOP-E and Romney in their quest to force Akin out of the race.

One has to wonder what the payoff is for Rove. He obviously doesn't care about the liberal/conservative divide. It's about being in power...but...what does HE get out of it?

He also detailed plans for Senate and House races, and joked, “We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!”

To make this statement in the midst of FBI investigations into death threats to Akin's staff is unforgivable. Karl Rove should resign now.

I've got Fox on in the background, and I've not heard them mention this yet.

They're not breathlessly reporting that Sean Hannity will interview Karl to ask him to drop out as a Fox contributor.

Wonder if they have a double standard? /sarc

The GOP needs to be purged, starting with Boehner, Rove and McCain. As much as I believe that, I don’t make jokes about them being murdered. Karl Rove is a classless jackass.

Remember this. They pulled their backing of Michelle Bachmann too, but she won because of grassroots, national AMERICAN Conservative support. The TEA Party that withdrew its backing with its rush to judgement needs to get its head on straight and go for it all the way home. Period.

One would think Rove could better accentuate a point than referring — even jokingly — to the murder of someone. That sh*t doesn’t fly anymore.
