Troy Davis mourned as a martyr by 1,000 in Georgia

More than 1,000 people packed the pews of a church in this Georgia coastal city Saturday for the funeral of Troy Davis, whose execution for the murder of a Savannah police officer despite his claims of innocence sparked protests around the world and led to a renewed campaign to abolish the death penalty in the U.S.

Davis was celebrated as "martyr and foot soldier" by family, activists and supporters who spent years trying to persuade judges and Georgia prison officials that Davis was innocent but were unable to prevent his execution Sept. 21.

The crowd that filled Savannah's Jonesville Baptist Church on Saturday seemed less interested in pausing in remorse than in showing a resolve to capitalize on the worldwide attention Davis' case brought to capital punishment in the U.S.

Benjamin Todd Jealous, national president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a leading civil rights group, brought the crowd to its feet in a chant of "I am Troy Davis" - the slogan supporters used to paint Davis as an everyman forced to face the executioner by a faulty justice system. Jealous noted that Davis, 42, professed his innocence even in his final words.

"Troy's last words that night were he told us to keep fighting until his name is cleared in Georgia," Jealous said. "But most important, keep fighting until the death penalty is abolished and this can never be done to anyone else."

After four years of extraordinary appeals, every court that examined Davis' case ultimately upheld his conviction and death sentence for the 1989 slaying of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail, who was shot twice while trying to help a homeless man being attacked outside a bus station.

There’s no doubt he was one of a group of three who executed the cop. There’s also no doubt he wore the shirt of trigger puller earlier in the night. Recently he said one of the other three did it. But very recently he stopped talking about it.

It's one thing to oppose the death penalty but to celebrate Troy Davis is despicable. These people are trash.

My man, get your facts straight.

I'm going to use Ann Coulter's article as a source, but it's unchallenged in its precision in retelling the events.

"Some eyewitnesses described the shooter as wearing a white shirt, some said it was a white shirt with writing, and some identified it specifically as a white Batman shirt. Not one witness said the man in the yellow shirt pistol-whipped the vagrant or shot the cop."

There was no group who shot officer McPhail. I personally don't like the insinuation that there was a group who shot this policeman. It was, as was testified, one man: Troy Davis.

Coulter’s article is a little different that what I read, but what I read was fairly precise about the testimony (written by a legal authority). I don’t have it handy now, I read it about a month ago.

Even if you leave the murder of the police officer out of it entirely, his earlier actions that night clearly indicate depraved indifference and multiple attempted murder. Sorry, he got what he deserved one way or the other.

"Martyr and foot soldier?"

Funny way to describe a cold blooded killer.

No doubt about the prior shootings and there’s no doubt in my mind he was the cop shooter. My point was a little different from the “official” MSM spin, which leaves out the part about him being at least an accomplice. They make it sound like he was just passing through town that night.

“Martyr and foot soldier?”

“Funny way to describe a cold blooded killer.”

Not if you are describing a race war.

The fact still remains the same 30 people identified him as the murderer why do you think so many courts refused to hear the case after the verdict was announced. He was a murderer and known in Atlanta as a hit man...This is what happens when idiots follow other idiots . This is exactly how we ended up with obama....

Oh, Hell no!

A martyr isn’t an innocent person who is killed. The word means, “witness.” A martyr is one who witnesses the gospel, even to the point where he is killed for it. Even if Troy Davis were innocent of this shooting, he is still guilty of another shooting, he is unrepentant for either shooting, and he in no way witnesses the gospel.

Right. As in the paster in Iran who was martyred for not renouncing Jesus. This guy in Georgia was just a criminal getting his sentence served. Nothing more.
