"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

[To: paulycy]

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

Ya think this may have something to do with current economic conditions?

It did for me. I cancelled my monthly a year ago, but as I sit here having a beer it occured to me that the survival of FR is way more important.

I'm back on monthly now and feeling like I'm doing my bit again.

FRegards,
Eddie01

Well, this site is unabashedly and exclusively pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-country, pro-liberty and pro-constitution. There is absolutely nothing on that list that I’m willing to surrender, negotiate on or compromise away.

I haven't been on FR long but I can understand (and admire) your stance on this.

Having said that, I do agree with some of the comments upthread and have made this point before: whether you agree with this view or not, the perception outside of FR is that the ZOT comes down awful fast in this place... it put me off joining for a very long time and that's based on being on other talkboards full of right wingers who told me, "I just wasn't right wing enough".

Actually, that gives me an idea. Every time you ZOT an aspiring conservative with an open mind but who could be an asset to the cause with a little bit of steering in the right direction, you're making a conscious decision to sending them over to the RINO conversion shops - Hannity's or the Daily Mail forums in the UK - or worse, to left wing talkboards like Guardian Talk.

So since you're doing that already and it pleases you to do so, AND they do get advertising revenue, have you thought of charging them a commission for referrals?!

I would like to take this moment to point out that the ONLY person mentioning torture and violence towards Mormons is Eastforker.

None of us have ever said that or even THOUGHT it.

As is evidenced by your posts, the hate doesn’t come from the inmans.

We ran up the corporate credit cards on travel (criss-crossed the country on tours three or four times in the last two years), went way over budget on our national convention and ended up borrowing 7,000 from one FReeper and 13,000 from another (both are almost paid back, thank you very much), plus we ran up a sizable legal bill and lawsuit settlement last year and it’s almost paid off thanks to the Freepers putting in extra the last couple of fundraisers.

Quix, I have no desire to get into word-parsing, etc. with you because that's exactly what the vituperative religious forums evolve into today.

I've made my position clear on the couple blurbs I've posted here which is.....I don't see the point of a religious forum that is almost always a battlefield and leads to fights, nastiness and divisions between freepers.

Doctrine of any faith has nothing to do with my position. It's the endless nasty internecine warfare.

A case in point and without getting into the doctrines, beliefs, organization etc. of Mormonism, I have seen and still see a Mormon thread running or being posted new almost EVERY SINGLE DAY for YEARS. It's obsessive....it's actually creepy the obsession with Mormonism and how long this obsession has continued.

The threads always evolve into open warfare. I've also seen anti-Catholic obsessiveness also. Civilized debate is one thing, obsessive behavior on this forum is another.

These peculiar behavior patterns and desire to fight by a relative handful of zealots has gone on for years...and what's the point except an ever-widening circle of freepers who can't stand each other or their religious views.

I've made my point and will not go on as I am not in any way obsessive/compulsive....nor do I relish prolonged freeper infighting and nit-picking over religious doctrines while our country is foundering.

Leni

There was a blogger in the last week or so that kept posting article, with links to their blog, BUT, the articles on their blog were NOT original and came from other news sites/sources and when they posted them to FR they failed to link to the originating source and this is exactly why some sites and sources have a problem with their material being posted elsewhere. Its exactly why FR has suits file against it.

Jim, since there have been suggestions for tee shirts, etc on this thread, you might want to consider this one.

This comment just brought it to mind.

I used to frequent RightNation nearly as much as I did FR, but over time, FR proved to be the superior community. I probably only check in at RN a couple of times a year, now.

Last time I stopped in, I spent a few hours reading threads there, and noted that there wasn’t a single Palin article posted anywhere that I could find. Being that I spend 99.9% of my online time here, that stood out to me right away.

Only thing I can imagine, is that the management there has put the kibosh on all things Palin-related. Why that is, I have no idea, given that she’s the biggest news maker on the right.

The threads always evolve into open warfare.

Even this thread has a religious battle going on inside it.

FR's religious threads are among the crankiest things I've ever seen online.

Banner ads are fine with me. It’s the ones that pop up over what you’re trying to read that are irksome.

Isn't it amazing how noobies know it all?

Jim built FR from nothing but a noob foreigner knows a better way. The all inclusive Rino tent. Liberalism has worked so well in the UK.
