DNA Not The Same In Every Cell Of Body
ScienceDaily ^ | july 16, 2009

Posted on 07/19/2009 7:46:56 PM PDT by djf

Research by a group of Montreal scientists calls into question one of the most basic assumptions of human genetics: that when it comes to DNA, every cell in the body is essentially identical to every other cell. Their results appear in the July issue of the journal Human Mutation.

This discovery may undercut the rationale behind numerous large-scale genetic studies conducted over the last 15 years, studies which were supposed to isolate the causes of scores of human diseases.

So would this effect any legal cases?

I’m wondering if this finding has anything to do with auto-immune diseases...

You know all those billions we poured into genetic research? Well, there was just this one little problem with our methodology...

OH CRAP

I just got the feeling that genetic research has just been set back about a hundred years. Kinda like when they first discovered the sun doesn’t actually revolve around the earth.

oopsie, start over at the very beginning now...

Interesting thought! The DNA in semen would not match the DNA collected in later blood samples!

That billion dollar project to sequence the human genome? Going to the dust bin?

I dont’ think i understand this anymore. we are created from a sperm and and egg. There’s only one version of DNA in that first living cell created by fertilization. If blood is that one version, where the heck do the other tissues get their version that isn’t the same as the original version?

It’s not logical.

This is saying that DNA changes in a person’s body over time.

And to think that some FReepers don’t have an issue with having a government database on everybody’s DNA.

Scary.

So would this effect any legal cases?

And it probably won't affect them either.

This study may be referring to the fact that DNA is methylated differently in different parts of the body. Some genes are turned on or off depending on their location.

Well, this is certainly going to screw up CSI.

I wonder if past convictions will be called into question.

Perhaps “The Innocence Project” is meeting with their attorneys to issue a statement such as:

“OOPS!”
