(2007-10-12) — In the midst of a push by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, to pass a resolution labeling the Ottoman (Turk) Empire genocidal for the death of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915, House Republicans have introduced a bill condemning the Roman Empire for “the wholesale slaughter and domination of most of the known world from about 41 B.C. to 476 A.D.”

Rep. Pelosi, who often refers to her Italian heritage, called the GOP move “nothing short of a hate crime” and “a cynical effort by Republicans to overshadow what could be the first significant accomplishment of the Democrat Congressional majority.”

Quality satire from Scrappleface, as usual.

If the Republicans in Congress had three working brain cells among them, they'd make the Democrats vote to condemn (or refuse to vote to condemn) the 1970s communist genocide in Southeast Asia that they helped facilitate.

The Romans didn't wipe anyone out unless they asked for it. Bad for business. In fact, they went out of their way to accomodate any sort of foreign government or ruler, no matter how strange, that promised to keep order, pay taxes, and pay homage to Rome and the emperor. They didn't impose their religion. Except to demand sacrifice to the Emperor, you were free to practice any cult you wished. In fact, the Romans would practice it right along with you.

The Romans were all-around great guys until you stepped out of line and then, Vae Victis, baby!

I thought we weren’t allowed to say “BC” and “AD” anymore. Isn’t it supposed to be that “BCE” and “CE” crap?

The romans wiped out carthage and the Phoenicians. And that wasn’t good enough for them. They then sowed their fields with salt.

> “The Speaker said if the resolution passes, Democrats plan to push for sanctions against the Ottoman Empire, including a ban on sales of cavalry horses, Sopwith Camel fighter biplanes and Zeppelins.”

NOOOOOOOOO! Not Sopwith Camel fighter biplanes. NOOOOOOOOOO!

Oh, there was at least one religion that the romans wouldn’t stand for and killed anyone caught practicing it. That was the druids of the british isles. These people practiced human sacrifice and other nasty stuff. The romans wouldn’t stand for that kind of insanity.

Now the Democrats should condemn the Egyptians for enslaving the Hebrews...

No, wait... that might upset Palestinian negotiations.

IMO, if the Republicans in Congress had gonads, they would draft a resolution proclaiming Pelosi and her Liberal cohorts traitors. They would also condemn the Liberals in Congress for their part in causing our troops to be wounded and many killed because of their rhetoric and their political games.

The ancient Assyrians ruled Mesopotamia for a large portion of recorded history, and were one of the most brutal empires in the history of mankind.

When the Assyrian empire reached it's golden age from around 745 BC to 626 BC they were renowned for their brutality in battle. Men, women and children were often thrown into large fires set in cities that did not surrender, the city rulers would often find their heads on stakes outside the city as a warning to others.

Because it provides a great way to toss a monkey wrench into the new success in Iraq and throws a huge impediment into the WOT, along with a big political embarrassment to President Bush.

Screw America. What is new there?

The only reason the Democrats are doing this is to damage our war effort in Iraq. A lot of materiel comes through Turkish air space. They will stop giving us that access. The Democrats don’t have the balls to vote up or down on defunding the war, so they will use 92 year old transgressions to achieve their goal - defeat for America.
