SALINA, Kan. — A high school science teacher was suspended for allowing students to use the same instrument to draw blood from their fingers as part of a class project, district officials said Tuesday.

About 50 juniors and seniors in two science classes at Salina High School South used the same lancet, or small pin, to prick their fingers on Monday, said Carol Pitts, spokeswoman for the Salina school district.

The science teacher, who was not identified, was suspended with pay during an investigation, Pitts said....

Suspended with PAY? Incredible. The teacher acts like a buffoon and gets a paid vacation. And who says the teachers' unions aren't powerful.

The teacher should be in jail right now awaiting a bail hearing.

Before or after this imbecilic stunt?

I'm waiting to hear the process they used. They don't say either way if the lancets were washed in alcohol between students, so we're left to assume they weren't. But it wouldn't be the first time a reporter failed to ask.

I really do enjoy viewing a post that calls reason into the equation.

Seems to be more rare everyday.

Perspective matters, even as much as ideology.

Yes,I know.I'll repeat...it was a stupid move, but this is Kansas we're talking about. If it was Zimbabwe...or even San Francisco...perhaps we'd have something to talk about.

Maybe not AIDS, but what about Hepatitis? There are problably other blood-borne illnesses that can be transmitted in this fashion. This was an asinine thing to do,esp. for a science teacher.

WHAT? What college did this dufus attend?

AIDS and hepatitis are not the only things you can catch from a used needle. I wonder if the kids used alcohol on the puncture area. There are a lot of things that can be found on human skin that don't go well in punctures or the bloodstream. Staph, strep, E. coli, to name a few.

Clearly this is a call for additional funding if the school can't afford a lancet for each student. </ sarcasm>

Hi Gay State Conservative-

We're in agreement it was a silly move by the teacher. Furthermore, we are in agreement that the risk of dangerous infection is extremely low. The exposed metal portion of the lancet pictured below is about a millimeter in length. There is no need for FReepers to panic at this point.
