"It's important for society to participate in our wars - at home and the military. During WWII we had bond drives and ration cards, victory gardens, etc..

During WWII we had bond drives and ration cards, victory gardens, etc.. "

I think you made the point better then he did. I very much agree.

Was the war in Vietnam and Korea like this where the population was so disconnected?
I don’t know.

People have no sense of the history and sacrifices that has left this country free.

I think it would be good for our culture if at least the young men all had mandatory service for two years like Israel does.

IMO, the benefit would be among other things that there would be more independent men down the line and less sons living at home with their parents in their 30s.

Glad to see "Tony" go. Gary Sinese can't entertain the troops all by himself (all the other "loyal" entertainers have lost interest, I hear)

I'd like to see him actually do it, instead of talking about doing it. Then I'll admit he's got quite a pair of spicy meatsa ballsa.

I still think it's important for society to be involved, to participate, to share in the sacrifice and effort in some more concrete ways.

I think it would help a great deal.

I don't know about Korea. I was however a young adult during Viet Nam. And my recollection is the population was disconnected during it.

I'm pretty sure this guy is a BIG Bush hater. Maybe he said what he thought was so completely outlandish it would mock the Iraq war effort. But.. what do I know?

i think you are right. this cannot happen ,however, with a bipolar government like we have here in the US currently. i think you are understating the result, but would you have free fingers right now if BB didn't want you to?

I think the Dems could be shamed into it.

And I think it would have a most positive effect on the public morale and debate.

It needs to be, tangibly, "Our" war, not our government's war or this administration's war.

I disagree with that statement.

The Sopranos is SO BAD this season, no wonder he wants to get away!

Wow, I was really surprised that he's only 44, but I checked his IMDB entry, and it gives 1961 as his year of birth.

I wasn't around for the WWII years, but I've seen enough movies and heard enough from my parents to know we're not rationing rubber, sugar, cloth, gas, meat, steel and a number of other things we take for granted. No, the vast majority of us haven't sacrificed a thing, certainly not on a daily basis.

Gandolfini was not praising Bush. In fact, check this out:

This guy is one of us. And he uses his fame for OUR collective good and causes WE support.

The offer is appreciated, but I tend to prefer Corleone tactics to those of the Sopranos. It would do a world of good if some Muslim leaders woke up to a severed pig's head in their beds this morning.

"The American people haven't had to sacrifice anything."

Tell that to the hundereds of thousands of troops who have been over here living in not exactly Club Med conditions, missing their families, births of their children, graduations, ets. And that's not even mentioning the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

And even we civilians who come here, although we do so voluntarily, give up freedom and live life similar to that in a minimum security prison.

He should come here. These Hollywood types need a dose of reality.
