I don't know about Korea. I was however a young adult during Viet Nam. And my recollection is the population was disconnected during it.

The draft existed during the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. That made everyone of draft age and their families involved.

The sense at home during the Korean War was more like Iraq. A far, far, war in a far, far land.

One way or another, though, everyone was involved in Viet Nam.

None of it like WW II. Ration cards for gas and butter, meatless Tuesday, couldn't buy a car for 5 or 6 years, everything was recycled, tin cans, string, rubber bands, the aluminum foil in a gum warpper. It was all war, all the time, 24/7.

If we ever had to fight another WW II I don't think we'd prevail, what with half the country in permanent appeasement mode.

Korea, yes. VN, no. The public was very connected to VN. It was everywhere from the nightly body counts on TV news to HS campi where pimply faced fat girls staged sit-ins.
