That's the best image! If you don't mind, I'm stealing that one, but I'll give you credit.

I used to have a massive crush on Alec Baldwin when I was a young lass in my early twenties (Beetle Juice era). He's become such an unhinged jerk, and his personality has far eclipsed his acting ability that I can no longer enjoy him in a film. In the back of my mind, I'll just keep thinking--man, he's an out of control loon.

Susan Sarrandon ruined Rocky Horror for me, Whoopie Goldberg ruined Star Trek TNG, etc.

The last time I was in an actual movie theater was to see King Kong/Narnia double feature. Unless its real special, and features a giant gorilla, I just have no desire to financially reward these left-leaning idiots anymore. Let 'em go sell their plasma for soup, or work at Wal Mart.

While I see your point about it not being a good idea, and don't think we've reached the point we need to ration yet as they did in WWII, I was being more cynical, implying it's awful for us to feel "put-out" when men and women are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting for us.

I was calling for victory gardens and war bonds a few years ago, even wrote President Bush about it. I think if we all have a visible, tangible stake in the war (and I know we do anyway) it would make people more supportive. Less throw your hands up and walk away.

Americans can pull together like nothing else. 9-11 and Katrina are 2 great examples of that.

”The draft existed during the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. That made everyone of draft age and their families involved.”

This is a negative involvement. This is like going to the dentist, or something you don’t want to do.

” One way or another, though, everyone was involved in Viet Nam.”

The only positive involvement during Viet Nam a citizen could do is ‘Make love not war.’ (be a hippy.) It sounds as though the war was lost at the home front by leadership not understanding citizens needs.

Exactly. I don't agree with his draft or troop increasement comments, but I just read through the lines, and it really does seem as though he was just telling the POTUS to get tough. ;-)

I wasn't around for the WWII years, but I've seen enough movies and heard enough from my parents to know we're not rationing rubber, sugar, cloth, gas, meat, steel and a number of other things we take for granted. No, the vast majority of us haven't sacrificed a thing, certainly not on a daily basis.

We are not sacrificing to build an army as they did during WWII because it is not needed. Should we just ration coffee, sugar and shoes for moral support?

Profiling, Internment, Dissent and a Declaration of War provides some insight into what would happen if we were operating under World War II Rules.

reinstating the draft is a democratic talking point, do you think this country needs to reinstate the draft?
