East-central Fresno neighbors fear effects of methadone clinic

A sometimes emotional crowd aired concerns Tuesday night about a methadone clinic moving into an east-central Fresno neighborhood.
About 200 people packed into the American Legion Hall on First Street to express fears about increased crime with the clinic's move to Shields and Millbrook avenues.
"Do you see this child?" asked Karen Valpey, 40, pointing to her 8-year-old son, Brenden. "This is who we're trying to protect."
Council President Brad Castillo, who organized the meeting, told the crowd there's nothing the city could legally do to block the clinic's move.
"If we do, we will be sued for millions of dollars," Castillo said.

Brad Castillo, City Council Member, made a major fool out of himself. He said that there's nothing can be done about this. It's a done deal. He said it would be discrimination against the disabled for us to deny the Methadone Clinic to set up shop right there and the City could be sued. Yada yada yada. People yelled at him that THEY HAVE TO LIVE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD 24/7.
If anyone's interested, I'll fill you in. I was so disgusted I walked out. But first I said that I used to take my step son to a methadone clinic in Seattle. I saw him get into a huge fist fight right at the front doors. He's dead now. Drugs finally got him. Methadone was just another drug he was addicted to.

Where, pray tell, do you suggest they put this place. Bakersfield?
They're getting up a petition and looks like we'll be picketing. The clinic is expecting to serve 500 clients!! Riding the buses, etc., with elementary age school kids. This is going to be a battle royal. The people I saw last night are up in arms.
So sorry about your stepson. It must have been hell for you.
Meanwhile, in another neighborhood, citizens are enraged that a homeless "tent city" is being plunked down whether or not they want it. And there are always angry outbursts when halfway houses for sex predators come into local 'hoods.
Maybe every city needs to set aside a Creep Zone, where all of the above and every other undesirable, dangerous enterprise can be set up. I'm not kidding. Under a bridge would be a good place to start.
That depends. Would they give out free samples?
This clinic has NO BUSINESS being dumped in a NEIGHBORHOOD where kids are playing and walking to school. There is an elementary school, a foster care home, and a lot of little old retired people. I can't believe it. But the worst part is that the City Councilman is not going to do diddlysquat about it. Roll over and let us all be screwed. It's disgusting.
It's going to be a real battle. Brad Castillo doesn't know what he's in for. LOL!
I have often said, what needs to be done is for conservatives to buy a house in upscale neighborhoods for housing paroled felons and sex offenders and let the liberals see first hand what the people in the projects get to see from the decisions of liberal judges.
Logic dictates that the clinic be close to the "clients," no?
Or, perhaps they can work out a deal with a local fast food franchise?
Hey, they were "resettling" sex offenders in the neighborhood I lived in before this one. The gubmint paid the landlords a premium to take them.
BTW - I saw Operation Crayon being featured on the news recently. Yahoo!
Back to the Methadone Clinic - what a horrible development. The neighbors found out about it in a round-about way. Nobody bothered to tell them a bloomin' thing. There were some PO'd folks there last night and Brad Castillo hasn't heard the last of it. I can promise you that.
Put it in the City Hall.
BINGO!
They tried to do this where I live.
far from it....
people on Methadone are also addicted to other drugs, both legal and illegal....
and, they will do anything for those drugs....
They always put abortion clinics in lower-economic zones, too. You would NEVER see an abortion clinic or a methadone clinic in a NICE PART OF TOWN!! When are people going to wake up?
So I take it this is a residential neighborhood? That seems so strange to me. In my town both methadone clinics are downtown, with no residences to speak of nearby (one of them is sort of close to one of the 'projects' .. which seems appropriate, I guess). Why would they even consider putting one in a residential neighborhood?
Hey they tried to do this where I live, even in the midst of all the crap that went on. People did the same, got really outraged and turned it down.
