looks good to me
I believe that ended up being a very famous US Supreme Court case. If I recall correctly, the question ended up being whether a federal judge could order a town/city to raise taxes to pay for the fines the racked up for ignoring his order or something like that.
I see activist judges aren't a new problem at all!
Tell him you want to see some proof. Case law, attorney opinion, precendent. Call him on it or REcall him on it.
The children's mental health home across the street is owned by none other than Council Member Brad Castillo, the same guy who ran this meeting. Something's fishy. He is responsible for FOSTER CHILDREN and he thinks it's okay for a methadone clinic to open up RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. What's wrong with this picture? We all just sat there with our mouths hung open. Unbelievable. And they tried to shut us down, too; didn't want to hear what we had to say.
Some people said WHY DID YOU HAVE THIS MEETING IF IT'S ALL A DONE DEAL? He said he wanted to let us meet the clinic staff. Oh, brother. LIke I said, I got up and walked out after I said my piece.
Had a call tonight from one of the organizers. She said they're going to petition and picket. I'm up for it!!
I was about 11 years old at the time and heard about it second hand. I seem to recall it was a state judge, but I could be wrong.
Wonder what the chances are that "Sixty Minutes" would cover it. /end daydream
where to put the methadone clinic ?
as an outpatient facility in a hospital and demand order there. or in an area in a police department.
in and out. stand over there, drink it and move on.
It's a ridiculous program, clients there for years on their
80mg. Part of the program should be mandatory detox, and since they're all involved for years,it would be done without them even knowing they're being weaned off.

His name was Judge Leonard Sand. He was a federal judge. Might still be kicking around.

While I wouldn't want one in my neighborhood they still perform a valuable function. In my younger years while still in the recording industry I was saddled with a monumental heroin habit and probably the only reason I'm still around was because I was able to get into one of the first Methadone clinics in Manhattan.
A lot of people don't realize (even in the medical field itself) that Methadone is commonly prescribed by pain management physicians for chronic pain.
My brother has had a long, long nightmare of problems, one of which was a brown recluse bite that destroyed his leg. He tried for 8 years to keep the leg but finally lost it about a year and a half ago.
But........his pain doc put him on Methadone for his daily and severe pain while he still fought the bad leg. In no time he became an addict and often abused this PRESCRIBED medication. It nearly ruined him and came close to taking his life.
They say it is harder to kick than heroin and I believe it. My brother was one of the few that conquered it. He got rid of all of he had in the house and had no means of replacing it in his circumstance. His withdrawal was torturous.
It's been about 2 years now and it was the best thing he ever did. He gets angry at the thought of where it took him.
Brad Castillo was defeated when he ran for re-election. His term ends on December 31, 2004. Conservative Republican Larry Westerlund will be sworn in as that District's NEW City Council Member the first Tuesday in January. Larry Westerlund, a Navy Veteran and active member of the Naval Reserve, is a nice guy, conservative, Christian, attorney.... and he won by a large margin in the spring primary.
Perhaps contacting him might be a better use of time and energy than attempting to persuade an outgoing Councilmember to do anything -- especially when there are not that many more City Council meetings between now and the end of 2004. You should be able to contact him through the local Republican Central Committee since he does not take office for another 6 weeks or so.
Just trying to be helpful ...
(And I am sorry for your loss; it is hard to lose a family member for any reason, especially to something as senseless as drugs.)
I am a 15 year sober recovering alcoholic. Five years ago I began working in the addiction treatment field at a residential center. Now, I'm leaving. It's all about co-occurring disorders and psyche meds now. I would have run the place as a king when I sobered up in 1989.
Addicts can get a blonde master's level therapist to wag her head and pay attention and coddle them. They don't need to listen to old drunks like me anymore, and everything from withdrawals to the blues has a diagnosis now.
The people in my center are enslaved every bit as much with their methadone, handfuls of psyche meds and even narcotics, (I kid you not..They have them prescribed.)as they were living in the streets.
Personal responsibility, never heard of it....
See what I can do. I wonder if O'Reilly or Hannity & Colmes would be interested.
You have no idea how happy it makes me to know that some people have actually been able to overcome this addiction. Good for you!!!!!!! How on earth did you do it? You need to write a book, FReeper pal.
Bless you heart. Thanks for posting your thoughts. Love ya!
Thanks for the ping!
