AN ASTEROID which came crashing into Earth and NASA had no idea it was coming reiterates the need to keep a closer eye on the sky in case a massive space rock comes hurtling towards our planet.
A small asteroid shot towards Earth at 14.9 kilometres per second, and NASA admitted it did not know it was coming. The space rock known as 2019 MO was just three metres wide and exploded when it hit the planets atmosphere on 22 July above the Caribbean, but the way it approached unexpectedly reaffirms the need for more eyes on the sky. NASA said: When first spotted, 2019 MO was about 310,000 miles (500,000 kilometers) from Earth - farther out than the orbit of our Moon.

I thought NASA was working on ways to deflect asteroids from coming to earth.

They are still working off the backload of Muslim science assistance issues.

I thought asteroids were not a problem based on some of the Free Republic scoffers.

And I thought we were all dead already from comet elenin and asteroid yu55, and then nibiru was supposed to eat us or something according to the true believers.
We did die from that, right?
We were assured we would.

That seems awfully small for an “asteroid.” Isn’t it really a meteor?

I think its size is on fuzzy edge dividing meteoroids from asteroids. Calling it an asteroid does make it scarier, though.
To: be-baw
Once it enters the earths atmosphere, it is a meteor.

If it orbits the sun (no matter what size it is) it's an asteroid. When it enters the earth's atmosphere, it's a meteor.
Asteroid: a small rocky body orbiting the sun. Large numbers of these, ranging in size from nearly 600 miles (1,000 km) across (Ceres) to dust particles, are found (as the asteroid belt) especially between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, though some have more eccentric orbits, and a few pass close to the earth or enter the atmosphere as meteors.
Meteor: a small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light.

Whoever you heard that from, it wasn't NASA.
To: be-baw
It was an asteroid before it became a Meteor.

Gee, its a nice house ya got there. Be a shame if a meteorite or, heaven forbid, an asteroid hit it. Sure, NASA can protect ya, but...eh...its gonna cost ya. A nominal fee. Don worry...
