Explanation: This sharp telescopic snapshot caught late September's Harvest Moon completely immersed in Earth's dark umbral shadow, at the beginning of a total lunar eclipse. It was the final eclipse in a tetrad, a string of four consecutive total lunar eclipses. A dark apparition of the Full Moon near perigee, this total eclipse's color was a deep blood red, the lunar surface reflecting light within Earth's shadow filtered through the lower atmosphere. Seen from a lunar perspective, the reddened light comes from all the sunsets and sunrises around the edges of a silhouetted Earth. But close to the shadow's edge, the limb of the eclipsed Moon shows a distinct blue hue. The blue eclipsed moonlight is still filtered through Earth's atmosphere though, originating as rays of sunlight pass through layers high in the upper stratosphere, colored by ozone that scatters red light and transmits blue.

Incredible!
Beautiful.
Just wow!
Thank you.
Beautiful.
Just beautiful!
Thank you.
It was quite attractive in realtime as well. I saw a man at the edge of Lake Michigan, with a nice camera on a tripod, shooting the whole eclipse as a video. I think lunar eclipses are really neat, but I’d never just stare at it from start to finish. Not sure I’d want a movie of it. :’) This one was unusually pretty, I thought. But I was content with viewing it at different stages.
In the Southern California desert we had a cloudless view of the 4th eclipse and blood moon. My son was in LA and said they could not even see it due to clouds/fog/smog.
Even though I do some amateur photography I did not take any pictures. I just wanted to enjoy. Trying to run and get a photo can take the pleasure out of a moment. Sometimes I just want to save things to the hard drive in my head.
Our son was born after a lunar eclipse - we were driving to the hospital and saw it go dark and the maternity ward was Packed! Nurse told me any lunar/solar activity always seems to “fill up” the hospital beds. I had my son 8 hours after getting checked in and because all the single beds were full, I got a private room with a double bed! So, I always have fond memories of THAT lunar eclipse and the beautiful baby boy born at 6:15 am the next morning...Oh, and Johnny Carson was still hosting the tonight show (Aug 89) and that night Jay Leno was one of the guests!
:’) Nice!
