Explanation: Why would a rising Sun look so strange? No one is yet sure. What is clear is that the above unusual sunrise was captured last month from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The body of water in the foreground is Rio de La Plata, considered by many to be the widest river in the world. Although the above image is actually a combination of a normal and a very short exposure needed to avoid oversaturating the bright Sun, the photographer saw this unusual structure with his own eyes, indicating that this effect was caused by neither reflections nor distortions in the camera or lens. What looks like arms on this monster illusion might actually be, for example, low level clouds just thick enough to scatter sunlight without completely blocking the Sun. Additionally, the distortion visible on the lower part of the Sun's image might indicate a Etruscan Vase or Fata Morgana mirage possibly created by a curious refracting layer of air over the water. Unusual atmospheric phenomena are frequently thrilling to see personally, and although most can be traced to well known phenomena, others, for lack of more data, remain mysterious.

Amazing picture... I am guessing the clouds were close to land(?) and picked up the coloring. I’ve never seen anything like it!

I have seen all sorts of interesting sunrises here in Florida and this is because of some clouds out over the ocean just over the horizon.
One of the eriest sunrises I saw was in Tehran, there are two days a year when the entire city is obscured by a large shadow at sunrise even though the skies are clear. There is a volcanic mountain called Damavand ENE about 45 miles from the city that is about 18,400 feet in elevation at is peak. A conical shadow is created that starts off narrow at the peak and fans out acorss the landcape when the alignment is right.
The Chinese keep investing and investing. They don’t understand Argentina! GOOD!
The sunrise you describe in Tehran does sound very strange indeed. It makes complete sense to me that Ancient people would see strange sunsets, sunrises, eclipses etc... and try to interpret them or view them as a foreboding.
My girlfriend (who’s a trained and very talented photographer) and I brought this image up on a 24” HD flat panel display at very high res to view it. You can then clearly see the sun rising and clouds in front of it, giving this effect. No mystery....it’s a fortuitous if beautiful shot.

Very calming and beautiful photos, Cripplecreek! The second picture reminds me of what my Mother use to say: “The Gates of Heaven are open”. When we were just little kids and saw rays through the clouds, she would say that God was calling the newly passed home to Him. He was illuminating the way to Heaven. Sounds corny, huh?! Well, I have told that same story to my three and now when they see the rays.. one will yell, “Look, the Gates of Heaven are open”.

My great grandmother used to tell me that thunder was angels bowling.
I can only imagine that as a child, you weren’t afraid of thunder after hearing that! Many little ones are terrified of thunder and lightening BUT if a nice story goes with it... it is suddenly not scary anymore. Your Great-Grandmother sounded like a wonderful lady!
I never really thought about it but I can’t remember ever being afraid of thunder.
