A South Carolina man believes he may have discovered the plane Amelia Earhart was flying when she vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937.

Former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer Tony Romeo turned his fascination with the legendary pilot into an adventure when he embarked on an ambitious search for Earhart's lost plane.

Romeo, who sold his commercial property investments to fund his search, managed to take a sonar image of an aircraft-shaped object on the ocean floor in December.

Earhart and her Earhart's Lockheed 10-E Electra vanished at the height of her fame, a mystery that has spawned decades of searches and conspiracy theories.

Earhart's record-breaking run as a pioneering pilot at the very beginning of the aviation age made her an international celebrity.

She became the first woman to fly solo, nonstop across the continental US and the Atlantic, and the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the mainland over the Pacific.

'This is maybe the most exciting thing I'll ever do in my life,' Romeo told the Wall Street Journal.

'I feel like a 10-year-old going on a treasure hunt.'

'For her to go missing was just unthinkable,' Romeo said.

Adding: 'Imagine Taylor Swift just disappearing today.'

Romeo spent $11 million to fund the trip and buy the high-tech gear needed for the search including an underwater 'Hugin' drone manufactured by the Norwegian company Kongsberg.

The expedition launched in in early September from Tarawa, Kiribati, a port near Howland Island, with a 16-person crew aboard a research vessel.

In outings that lasted 36 hours each, the unmanned submersible scanned 5,200 square miles of ocean floor.

Yep, I saw that film to. The transmitter was dangling behind the plane attached to the wire as it took off in the field. I had remembered that a person in New York had a radio and claimed to receive transmissions from what he thought was Amelia late at night (New York time) who was in trouble.

Right, so Earhart could broadcast on her radio, but she wasn't receiving transmissions. Many men have had a similar problem with the women in their lives.

“And the women - they didn’t have any tops on! We’d fly low over the beach and drop candy and food to them.”

Women wearing tops world wide is a relatively recent phenomenon. It was considered completely natural, a not at all sexual, to see women nursing their children. Get on a train in Europe and you may see the same thing, although more discreetly. In the tropics, women didn't need tops.

The Douglas A-20 bomber was built in the USA and delivered to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease. It was then assigned to the 51st Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment of the Naval Air Force of the Soviet Baltic Fleet. On 18 September 1944, the aircraft attacked the German freighter M/S Moltkefelt, which was sailing in the escort of the minesweeper M 151. The anti-aircraft fire from the minesweeper proved to be accurate and effective. As a result the pilot Gusman Miftahudinov, who commanded the aircraft, had to launch it.

The entire crew of three, consisting of pilot Miftahudinov, gunner/radio operator Gleb Lokalov and navigator Yuri Aksenov, left the sinking machine and boarded a life raft. They then drifted in the raft for several days until they reached the Åland Archipelago. Near Kökar Island, they were rescued by the Finnish coastguard from Motor Yacht unit MP-103.

I’ve seen this picture before as well. I honestly believe Nikumaroro Island as the most likely location for her landing and subsequent disappearance. But until someone comes up with hard proof, this may be one mystery that will never be solved.

I will say one thing about all. Whenever I hear about this I naturally go to Google Maps and look for Nikumaroro. Then I start panning out and looking at other islands out there and see which ones are inhabited and which ones aren’t. Nice way to pass the time in my retirement years. LOL

Hard to determine what it is. No sense of scale and no idea what’s on the floor of the ocean at that depth that might distort the shape when it hit the bottom.

But I agree with you that it does look a lot like an anchor.
