The discovery by researchers led from the University of Toulouse–Jean Jaurès was made in the 'Grotte Mandrin', 1.5 miles south of Malataverne, in the Rhône Valley.
Previously, the oldest proven examples of modern human settlements in Europe were dated back to 45,000–43,000 years ago — 10,000 years earlier.
Furthermore, the Mandrin cave also provides the first clear example of a site that was alternately occupied by Neanderthals and modern humans (Homo sapiens).

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

It took awhile for Civilization to take hold. It would form and just as quickly dissolve again. Even after hundreds of years of continuous existence it would still occasionally disappear. We tend to take for granted something which is far from gauranteed.

The allure of power tends to draw the worst of the worst into politics. It is when the men who just wanted to be left alone realize they must do something , and do it NOW , that things get interesting.

...Apparently, we don't have a civilization now... One of the reasons I'd like to see Civilization grow to some off planet status is that it nearly ends the possibility of another total collapse. Space is such an unforgiving environment that technical know how must be maintained or you die.

Not an issue. Most people would opt to stay on Earth. It is the young bold and bright ones who would the leap. The main reason it has not happened so far is money. Automation will soon make space a money MAKING enterprise. Much more than the special niches already in use.
