They were once used to trap hipster goth types who were mysteriously drawn to Stonehenge.

Kept the mastodons out of the village. Very effective.

Thanks gnarledmaw. It's where the Druid Lives Matter dumped the missing parts of Stonehenge!

When I was a kid there was a Hagar The Horrible comic strip with Hagar and Lucky Eddie walking through Stonehenge and the dialogue went something like this:

Lucky Eddie: What are these big stones here for?
Hagar: People put them here thousands of years ago so that nobody would ever forget them.
Lucky Eddie: Who put them here?
Hagar: Nobody knows

It’s an indication of how bored people were back then.

If protesters try to pull down Stonehenge, will anyone stop them?

“the site consists of at least 20 huge shafts, more than 10 meters (32 feet) in diameter and 5 meters (16 feet) deep, forming a circle more than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) in diameter.”

32 feet across could have been roofed, and wooden structures inside like a floor or two (possibly a basement for animals) could have provided earth-sheltered (moderate temperature) food storage and lodging for pilgrims/festival attendees.

If there were animals, there’ll be poop. Lots of it. I grew up on a dairy farm. I know poop.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that these shafts were mass graves, perhaps laid down over time, or treasure-hunting.

They did...you didn’t see it? “Journey to the Center of the Earf”?
