Relaxnews Bugatti Chiron The new supercar comes loaded with a 1,500-horsepower W16 engine for 0-62 mph acceleration in 2.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 261 mph. Its expected to sell for around $2.6 million.
McLaren 570GT This supercar has a 570-horsepower V8 biturbo engine and manages 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds for a top speed of 204 mph. The McLaren 570GT is already available to order for around $217,000.

200 mph ?
Waddaya, nutz ??!!??
I recently got free subscriptions to “Car and Driver” and “Motor Trend”. It has been so long since I kept up with what we used to call “muscle cars” that I was not prepared for the incredible horsepower of newer cars.
The part that is even more surprising is how small some of the engines are. I think just about all the super cars now have turbos or superchargers.
I went to that show once when I lived in Geneva. It’s a wonder my oldest son even has a face. Picture your local convention center, CHOCK FULL OF PEOPLE. Now picture 90% of them smoking as they walk around. Picture a mom (me) with a stroller. Where are all the casually held cigarettes in relation to my boy’s face?? I needed a train’s cattle guard on that stroller! I couldn’t enjoy the cars!
Imagine how few place there are to get anywhere hear that speed. And of course the buyers of those cars are the least capable of operating them at one half that speed.
I have a normally aspirated 370Z with 350HP that weighs not much more than 3,000 lbs. A non-turbo 3.7 liter that runs like a booger. Much faster than this old guy wants to run but it really is a kick in the ass.
200mph is 300ft/sec.
261 Miles per Hour = 382.8ft/sec.
Meh.
Think how fast the astronauts go, and that’s nothing.
17,500 mph
The space shuttle does have a maximum speed of 17,500 mph, but that speed is relative to the Earth. If you think about the space shuttle’s velocity relative to the Sun, then the answer is the sum of Earth’s velocity plus that of the shuttle. This means that the shuttle is moving at 67,000 + 17,500 mph (84,500 mph).
84,500 Miles per Hour =
123,933.333333 Feet per Second
I had a 65 Olds Delta 88 which had a 425 rocket V-8. It was rated at 360hp but I think that was conservative because it ran like a bat out of hell.
Too heavy to compete with the muscle cars but still fast. I once drag raced a hot rod Chevelle SS396. I beat him for the first hundred yards or so. Mine had posi-traction which helped.
It actually got better mileage than my wife’s 73 Cutlass Supreme with a 350. It did have to have premium tho.
I drove a Gremlin-X for a while in High School. It had been re-painted, but the “X” striping kit was on backorder so it looked like the base model. I had fun with for awhile.
It's kind of hard to take your wife in the space shuttle for a relaxing drive along the beach, then stop into your favorite seafood restaurant for a bite to eat...
Just saying...
When I was in high school, Daddy had a Rambler V-8. It wasn’t super hot but I did beat every 289 and 283 in school.
I got to thinking I was pretty good then I tried to beat my friend’s Buick Skylark. I think it was something like 304 or something like that. He ate my lunch.
Oops, I meant to say 340 CI for the Buick.
I currently have a 2013 Audi S6 with a 4.0L V8 Twin Turbo and AWD. Audi understates it by a lot at 420hp and 0-60 in 4.6 sec. The car tuners say it is stock 480hp and Car and Driver clocked it at 0-60 in 3.7 sec.
Easy rule of thumb approximation: an acceleration of 1g is 20 mph per second.
62 ÷ 2.5 = 24.8 mph per second, or a sustained acceleration of 1.24g.
If I could get that Bugatti, then I would never be late for work again.
I have a 1977 Pontiac station wagon. it does 0 - 60 in 12 seconds. So there.
Yes, it surely would.
But at 17,500 mph, you both can see every beach in the world in less than 30mins, not have to do the driving, and get all the “seafood” (distilled essence of seafood) food you want, pre-packaged in nice greenish-blueish sea-themed tubes, to smear over protein crackers. And nautical-themed TP, can be included Mmmmm, what a date night!
