The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. How about A Wooden trellis, perogala (sp. ?), 50 pound monofilament fishing line woven like a fishing net - for suggestions.
If the metal archway is fenceing, just painting it silver should reduce the heat.
They grow hops (beer makeing) plants 20-25 feet high by braiding 3 lines vertically, with the plant being the fourth braid - but it is labor intensive.

Put them in plastic ziplock bag , that is in a burlap sack, on a concrete surface roadway , or driveway.
Then drive the car tires over the baggie and sack.
Easy ..peasey ! Then separate the meat from the shells from within the plastic bag.

My cucumber plants started looking weird - brown spots, then dead leaves, then dead vines. Next year I’ll have to figure out what that was and prevent it.
I am getting a boatload of tomatoes and green beans still. I like having an excess of vegetables I can can.
But I’m still trying to figure out my tattler lids. I’ve canned about 30 quarts od water, trying different techniques for tightening the lid to see what works without having to deal with food that didn’t seal. I still have 4 jars of apple pie filling in the frig..
I now have six Earthboxes myself. I love them! I seem to buy at least one new one every year. Being in Texas, the water demands, especially for the tomatoes, has caused me to set mine up permanent with the automatic watering system.

I have lots of metal in my growing area. Summer days can reach 100 degrees. But whether I am growing tomato, cuke, roses, or grapes, the leaves shade and cool the metal arbors. No scorching.
When we lived in the desert, to had tomato plants supported by chain link fence and shaded from the western sun by a huge old olive tree. They lived and produced for three years but were killed by frost. Do you think some sort of partial shade screen might help?

my inlaws would pull the tomato plant out, and hang it upside down and the tomatoes ripen that way...they would hang them in a garage or green house or shed...somewhere they can keep some warmth and out of the cold.
I was actually up around the NY area visiting this summer myself...didn't go to Ithaca this time but did go to several wineries near Cooperstown and ate at a nice restaurant just off the lake...
I grew trombone squash this year and its still in the garden...I think I'm going to let it keep going to the last minute because I've read that it becomes more like a butternut squash after a while....

I was trying to figure out the commonality between the failures between the different ring tightenings I did and it seemed almost random. Then I accidentally noticed that the gold rings had most of the failures. I had a pile of silver rings from the jars that sealed - and just happened to notice they were all silver! It was that the older rings were gold and had some corrosion on the inside. The ball lids didn’t care. I’m not sure I’m happy with these yet - the next few weeks will be the test. I’ll can some applesauce and tomatoes first, since I can re-process those if need be without ruining the food.
