Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy. Our government threatens to fine a company thats raised wages four years running. Our government threatens to fine a family for running its business according to its beliefs. Its not right. I know people will say we ought to follow the rules; that its the same for everybody. But thats not true. The government has exempted thousands of companies from this mandate, for reasons of convenience or cost. But it wont exempt them for reasons of religious belief. Not much good for gardening, but the kind of day when you want to put a stock pot on the back burner, and turn on the oven to bake bread, casseroles, and/or roasts. All to make you warm inside and out.LOL I have been reviewing some of the heirloom grains this week and need to narrow the list down to 2 or 3 that I will order. RICHMOND, Va. A humble 5-cent coin with a storied past is headed to auction and bidding is expected to top $2 million a century after it was mysteriously minted. The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is one of only five known to exist, but it's the coin's back story that adds to its cachet: It was surreptitiously and illegally cast, discovered in a car wreck that killed its owner, declared a fake, forgotten in a closet for decades and then found to be the real deal. It all adds up to an expected sale of $2.5 million or more when it...

Swedish police have detained a 31-year-old man in ngelholm in Western Sweden who was discovered after he sought advice from authorities on the legality of building a nuclear reactor in a domestic kitchen. The man began his experiment some six months ago and has reportedly been open about his plans to construct a nuclear reactor in his apartment in the small Swedish coastal town, maintaining a blog of his nuclear adventure. The man, who explained that his interest in nuclear physics was awakened as a teenager, ordered some radioactive material from overseas and acquired more by taking apart a domestic...

What to do with money? At least over here in Scandinavia, people have found the solution to that problem. According to some sources, tiny Sweden (9,3 million inhabitants) has more veteran American cars than California. Perhaps it's true. But statistics don't matter much. I'm Swedish and I have friends who spend half of their salaries on restoring old American cars to mint condition. Ordinary, working folks that is, no lie. (Links below)

Why waste your money on a 2006, used-up Maxum 4200 SY? Or yet another boring Lexus that lets you down? Over here in Sweden and elsewhere in Scandinavia, a lot of people are crazy about restoring old (wooden) yachts and veteran cars of the 1930s-1970s, even if nurturing such projects often set them back way more than buying new cars and boats would. Why is that so? Perhaps life was better around 1950? Or perhaps not. Personally, I'd say life always has involved hardship and seldom been carefree, but that didn't exactly bother people like Virgil Exner, did it? (Click...

Today is National Honeybee Appreciation Day well deserved because its estimated that more than 80 percent of flowering plants and almost a third of human food crops need bees as pollinators. Reports have been claiming the loss of bee populations is due to mites, pesticides and human activities. Many species of pollinators, including bees,...

One can measure the failures of the film American Beauty in so many ways, but perhaps the best is to realize that the screenwriter was so unsure of his audiences ability to spot a creep that he had to make Kevin Spaceys next-door neighbor not just a sadist and a closet case but also a collector of Nazi memorabilia. I bring this up because a fetish for the baubles of fascism is generally thought to be a good way of alienating civilized company. The auction house Christies refuses to sell the stuff. hi. I'm looking to start experimenting with solar cells - just enough juice to perhaps power (potentially at a later time) a lamp, a laptop dock, 2xAA battery charger, or, at its most ambitious, a desktop PC. where do I start? any advice would be appreciated, including where to reliably get them at a decent price.

The 'biggest American car show in the world' opened in Vsters in central Sweden on Thursday. More than 10,000 cars are expected for the Big Meet 2008 show. The annual event started 31 years ago and was founded by Kjell Gustafsson who has seen it grow from the humble beginnings of 40-80 cars in a parking lot in Anderstorp. "Just to keep the show going over three days costs 1.5 million kronor ($252,000). 160 officials work with this. That is around the same as the Hultsfred festival," Gustafsson said to Di.se. The Big Meet 2008 show will take place over...

Swedish boaters may soon need to pass a 'driving test' before taking to the seas. Should a forthcoming government proposal gain acceptance the new requirement will apply to boats that are over seven metres long and/or have a top speed of at least ten knots. "Between 200,000 and 250,000 boat owners may need to take the driving test," said Lars Hgdahl from the Ministry of Enterprise. A generous set of transitional rules may however soften the blow. Seasoned boaters with many years of documented experience will for example be eligible for a licence without needing to first pass a test....

I apologize if this is the wrong place for this-- I'm in an online government simulation game, where you can play a Republican or a Democrat in Congress. We have upwards of 100 active members, however, most of these are - you guessed it - liberals! The in-game Republican Party is getting kicked around in elections and in order to compete, we need 'a few good men' (or women) who are, ideally, intelligent, dedicated, sportsmanlike and enjoy gaming. You would have the chance to argue with Democrats, alongside your Republican friends, about a variety of fascinating topics - write legislation,...

I am trying to do a model RR layout for Christmas. I am working with Lionel O Gauge trains. I'd like some hints or references to sites on how to do elevations, mountains, etc. I am concerned about the grade a newer Lionel set can handle. I also wonder what kind of amterial I can use to shape things like slopes, hills, mountains, etc.

Before I could write my column this week, I had to take an hour off to watch "Antiques Roadshow" on PBS, locally WHA. It feeds my fantasy of finding or buying an item and have it turn out to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The show always has a few people who either bought an item at a yard sale for a dollar or two or found it. For example, Monday's show featured a man who went dumpster diving and found a rare print by John Turnbull of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was worth...
