my inlaws would pull the tomato plant out, and hang it upside down and the tomatoes ripen that way...they would hang them in a garage or green house or shed...somewhere they can keep some warmth and out of the cold.

That’s a good plan if the garage isn’t stuffed full - ours is totally stuffed.
