The Byzantine vessel has been found at a depth of 82 meters, and is up to 120-125 meters long... The divers have found hundreds of amphorae which were allegedly transported on the sunken vessel, and probably contained oils or wine... there are over 100 amphorae, most of which are intact and sealed with wax, and that the shipwreck must be at least 1,000 years old. The average size of the amphorae is about 75 cm (appr. 2.5 feet) in height, and 50 cm (app. 1.7 feet) in length... The Russian underwater archaeologists and divers are not even sure whether the said location hides the remains of a single shipwrecked Byzantine vessel, or there are two sunken ships to be found there. Establishing the cause of the shipwreck will be one of their primary goals. It is possible that two commercial Byzantine vessels carrying loads of oils and/or wine collided at sea... During much of the Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the city of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula was part of the Byzantine Empire, and had constant maritime contacts with the Byzantine capital Constantinople, among other Black Sea and Mediterranean ports.

Why is it that ships carrying amphorae sink? I’d never be caught with amphorae on the water.
I say giant 25m Humboldt Squid are attracted the amphorae and tend to drag the merchant ship down to their depth, covering their den, where they leave some amphorae as bait for their future prey. Just sayin...<;^)

Maybe it didn't sink with amphorae. Maybe generations of kids were out amphorae cruisin' and threw each one out at the same spot, so they came to rest on a ship already sunk down there. Now we have a different mystery...

I’m guessing they mean, the height is 2.5 feet, and since it’s round, the largest measurement through the body is 1.7 feet. By way of illustration, a cube’s dimensions are given with a single figure, e.g., an 8 foot cube.
The highly publicized amphoras Robert Marx found in the ship are in fact similar in shape to jars produced in kilns at Kouass, on the west coast of Morocco. The Rio jars look to be late versions of those jars, perhaps datable to the third century A.D. I have a large piece of one of the Rio jars, but no labs I have consulted have any clay similar in composition. So the edges of the earth for Rome, beyond India and Scotland and eastern Europe, remain shrouded in mystery.
