Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Apollo 11 Landing Site Panorama
NASA ^ | December 20, 2014 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: Have you seen a panorama from another world lately? Assembled from high-resolution scans of the original film frames, this one sweeps across the magnificent desolation of the Apollo 11 landing site on the Moon's Sea of Tranquility. Taken by Neil Armstrong looking out his window of the Eagle Lunar Module, the frame at the far left (AS11-37-5449) is the first picture taken by a person on another world. Toward the south, thruster nozzles can be seen in the foreground on the left, while at the right, the shadow of the Eagle is visible toward the west. For scale, the large, shallow crater on the right has a diameter of about 12 meters. Frames taken from the Lunar Module windows about an hour and a half after landing, before walking on the lunar surface, were intended to initially document the landing site in case an early departure was necessary.

Technically, this isn't a terrestrial shot. :') And it calls back to memory one of the Pretty Good Days in human history. Bon voyage, Neil Armstrong.

It’s weird to think that in all known universe, the creatures of the earth are the only things that have the senses and abilities to observe, react to, and manipulate the environment around them.

As A.C. Doyle once wrote, you could imply the existence of an ocean from a drop of water. How much is implied about life on earth by the evidence of the lander on its moon!

Fascinating look at the surface of the Moon and the first pictures
ever taken on another world by an astronaut.

Historic pictures, and very beautiful. Thank you, Mr. Civilizations.

Doyle is logically incorrect but that aside.....

Why would we think that after seeing man God would bother with any more creation? He keeps sending destruction to perfect us.....What makes us think that there MUST be other life out there?

I’ve said this before: My dream home would have a room with nothing but Alan Bean originals.

They did. The astronauts went up, and alien replicants came back. I’m the only one who knows.

The big version might make a nice multi-monitor wallpaper.

Answer to a clue on yesterday's WSJ crossword puzzle ("Ralph's wife").

(In three squares: A-L-ICE. The ICE went in one square. The puzzle's theme was "arctic circle," with eight ICE arranged around the grid in a circle.)
