Astronomy Picture of the Day -- The Eagle Rises
NASA ^ | July 21, 2012 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: Get out your red/blue glasses and check out this remarkable stereo view from lunar orbit. Created from two photographs (AS11-44-6633, AS11-44-6634) taken by astronaut Michael Collins during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, the 3D anaglyph features the lunar module ascent stage, dubbed The Eagle, as it rises to meet the command module in lunar orbit on July 21. Aboard the ascent stage are Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first to walk on the Moon. The smooth, dark area on the lunar surface is Mare Smythii located just below the equator on the extreme eastern edge of the Moon's near side. Poised beyond the lunar horizon, is our fair planet Earth.

One refreshing change -- I think it's been more than a year since I've seen anyone on the web (primarily, in my case, FR) claim that the Apollo missions were faked in a warehouse or movie studio. I suspect it has to do with the foolish movie "Apollo 18", which alleges that astronauts encountered alien monsters there. It's still stupid, but at least it's different. ;')

Nice! He’s also a former student of Eugene Shoemaker, and the only geologist to go to the Moon (so far). :’)

Super guy.

Lived in the same town he grew up in. Wife knew his mother from church. Wife helped with his re-election campaign. He was beaten by one of the most Leftist Dems.

Those were good days.

He is also a AGW denier, hee hee hee

Have some memorabilia from those events.

I am convinced that America, in its present form, could never, ever replicate the space program effort that took place from the 1950s - 1970s.

If what was accomplished then was attempted now, this is what would happen:

- NASA publicly releases the names of Air Force and Navy test pilots who will become the first astronauts; the Congressional Black Caucus, NOW, the NAACP, the Human Rights Campaign for LGBT Rights, and Congressional Democrats immediately hold a press conference lamenting the exclusion of minorities, gays, women, and transgendered Americans

- NASA announces the Lockheed, Boeing, Grumman, General Electric, and General Motors will cooperate to build the new rockets, launch platforms, space suits, capsules, and the myriad of associated technology needed. The President immediately announces an Executive Order canceling the contracts and orders that Small Business Association (SBA) 8(a) Minority-Owned and Woman-Owned Business be declared the prime contractors

- Houston Texas is announced as the site for NASA Control Headquarters; the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), in conjunction with the Labor Dept and the heads of major labor unions file a lawsuit alleging that Texas right to work status violates "the spirit of union workers right to a fair living wage." Congress immediately follows suit, and the plans to start construction are scrapped

- Despite the fact that billions have already been on construction of Cape Canaveral; the US Govt announced that the entire site will be abandoned. The EPA, the Sierra Club, the UN Environmental Agency, and various green groups applauded the decision, since the construction had threatened the nest construction of the Fulvous Whistling-Duck

In the first place, it's sideways. And no matter how I turn my iPhone, it's still sideways. I gave up.

in the second place, I don't have a pair 3-d glasses.

I did not know about the connection to Shoemaker. Jack's father was a mine engineer. Think Jack was actually born at Santa Rita. Part of the born in space group. (the town is open air above the pit for the mine. hee hee hee

We lived in Silver City from 1972-1986.

I was politically involved there in the 1980’s. That had nothing to do with how I made a living. Was a traveling salesman for a wholesale distributor.
