Explanation: In the final move of its kind, NASA's space shuttle Atlantis was photographed earlier this month slowly advancing toward Launch Pad 39A, where it is currently scheduled for a July launch to the International Space Station. The mission, designated STS-135, is the 135th and last mission for a NASA space shuttle. Atlantis and its four-person crew will be carrying, among other things, the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Raffaello to bring key components and supplies to the ISS. Pictured above, the large Shuttle Crawler Transporter rolls the powerful orbiter along the five-kilometer long road at less than two kilometers per hour. Over 15,000 spectators, some visible on the right, were on hand for the historic roll out.

I live about 90 miles south of the Cape.
Seen many from home and have driven up for many others.Also my son and I flew my plane to 10,000 feet a couple years ago to watch one take off from above.
Nothing like it especially a night launch.

I am seriously jealous! That is fantastic that you have been able to witness the launches.
As a kid, I thought the future would be like the movie “2001, a Space Odyssey”. Instead it has turned out more like “Idiocracy”.
Drove over from Tampa to see a Moon launch when I was in high school. Two friends and I cut school and drove over to watch it.
REally amazing but NOTHING like a shuttle launch.
It is really fun to go and stand on the cuseway just north of the docks for cruise lines at Cape Canaveral, about the closest most can get. I love to see the reaction of newbies.
Jaw drops and smiles everywhere. Lots of times folks start singing our national anthem. WAYYY cool.
Could you try to describe the difference for someone who has never been to a launch? What was your distance to the Saturn 5, and your distance to the Shuttle?

Back in I think 1970 we got along Washington Ave. along the Indian River in Titusville maybe 8 miles away
Best now adays is Cape rd. sr 401 and you are 6 miles away.
Much larger flame today and it REALLY lights up the sky at night.
Way cool a you can see the wave of sound coming at you by way of the wave of birds jumping out of the marshes in the area.
In my plane we stayed about 15 miles south at 10,000 feet. Ya get too close that way and they shoot you down.
Something I wish every American could see.
