Scientific Fraud Caused by Social Pressures

2.4 Diagnosis #4: The Attraction of Magnificent Academic Trusels. A "trusel" is an idea or a finding that is widely perceived to be true, but which is largely useless (or even of negative value). (The idea that a truth may lack value may be disturbing, but it is true, although it is not a trusel and probably will not be thought to be magnificent.)

A "Magnificent Academic Trusel" (MAT) is a trusel that has been widely acknowledged for its intellectual content (explicitly or implicitly), but without a corresponding amount of attention being given to its utility or even to its potential negative value for society. The negative value may come from commission or omission. It may deal with the content of a discipline, with the way a discipline is perceived, with knowledge that cuts across disciplines, and even with "integrative studies".

Academia is an environment where two main things go on as the defining part of the image that characterizes academia. These are: (a) faculty actions, involving the advancement of thousands of ideas to a student clientele (whether formally in the classroom or informally in the research environment) and (b) administrative actions involving the imposition of dozens of decisions that affect faculty-student performance and morale.

For reasons that are widely understood and accepted, the advancement of particular ideas is almost never subjected to prior scrutiny for evaluative purposes. Thus the concept of "quality control" in academia is weak, at best, and there is little likelihood that this situation will ever change through administrative action alone. Any attempt to "police" faculty utterances in the classroom will meet with deserving scorn.

There is much, much more at the site.

This is applicable with particular reference to the global warming scam and the recent hacking of the Hadley CRU.

The scientists are pushing global warming rather than get real jobs -- where they'd have to earn a living and meet definable goals to keep their jobs, rather than performing prestigious circle jerks.

Cheers! Cheers!

The “social pressures” is called political correctness. The fraud in climate “science” was caused by heavy political pressure to hate, ridicule and kill the careers of “deniers.” Deniers would be scientists studying the climate who came up with honest results that did not support the “settled science” - the theory of global warming.

Scientific fraud occurs in other areas of “settled science” protecting the dominance of various theories that will go unnamed. It used to be the Pope's political and social sensitivities and belief structures that could get scientists in hot water for incorrect results. Now it is the religion of political correctness. The more we “progress”, as defined by the liberal elite of today, the faster we digress in every profession.

For reasons that are widely understood and accepted, the advancement of particular ideas is almost never subjected to prior scrutiny for evaluative purposes.

This is simply untrue. That global warming has gone forward as a political movement has nothing to do with lack of skepticism among scientists. Plenty of physcists (Will Happer and Freeman Dyson to name two prominent ones) have strongly decried the lack of data and the imprecision of models used in climate analysis.

That politicians want to settle, politically, what is an open debate in the scientific community is not a fault of science, but a fault of politics.

I think what you're saying is correct -- mostly. Just taking a cross section of threads at FR you would find that even a group of fairly homogeneous political proponents do indeed question each other pretty closely on issues both great and small. Being social animals requires both cooperative and competitive behavior.

But... Some of this mechanism has clearly broken down. For example, it isn't merely a few well known physicists who object to AGW. I believe I saw one survey where as many as 45% of physicists were either skeptical or believed the evidence for AGW was incomplete or wrong. That didn't stop the APS from adopting support for AGW as an "official" position. There now a great many scientists who apparently don't understand that taking a position in support of a political issue as scientists is not only against the canon of ethics, but it is extremely dangerous as well.

The position of the APS is a political position, not a scientific one. And that is the fault of "science" in the sense that it is a political position taken by scientists, speaking, not as liberal politicians but as scientists.

For example, it isn't merely a few well known physicists who object to AGW

Over 31,000 scientists have expressed their disagreement with the AGW theories, people who are well educated in physics, meteorology, climatology, geology, chemistry, etc.

It is a matter of being heard. It is politically expedient to bury dissent on an issue which promises unprecedented political control for the Government, and a vehicle to wealth for those who embrace that control as well--all funded with the taxes of those who are subject to the most onerous provisions thereof.

Ultimately, the device is being used to destroy the economic engine which drives this nation and its ability to preserve its own liberty and project force elsewhere to maintain significance in the global arena.

This is no accident, and the falsification of scientific data by omission and/or commission is just a small part of a concerted effort which is being carried out in a broad spectrum of issues, from the invasion by illegal aliens, to environmental regulations which impede development of viable resources, to the current attempt to strip Americans of wealth by forcing them to buy insurance.

To anyone who takes a good look, it is apparent that, the greatest impediment to finding the truth in any matter is the perception foisted upon the public by the media, but that too works in concert with the rest to disable American industry (large and small) and to keep people from fighting the decline of this Repbulic.
