In Santa Clara County, 113 people have permits that allow them to carry concealed weapons, according to Sheriff Laurie Smith's office. Sixty-four permits issued to judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officers are considered confidential. Another 49 have been issued to "civilians.'' The applications for those permits-- which are public record -- include a variety of reasons for seeking a permit, based on real or perceived threats to the applicant or family.
