Thursday's New York Times misidentified GOP Senate candidate Pete Coors as a Ku Klux Klan member who murdered a black sharecropper. The Coors campaign found the error "so outrageous it's kind of funny," said spokeswoman Cinamon Watson. Advertisement "It could have been worse," she joked. "Pete could have been identified as John Kerry." The Times story concerned a federal court decision upholding Louisiana resident Ernest Avants' 2003 conviction in the slaying. The story indicated the accompanying photo was of Avants. But the picture actually was of Coors on the day the Golden beer baron announced he was running in Colorado's...

April 15, 2004--Pete Coors (R) is a political newcomer, but he's already competitive in the race for Colorado's U.S. Senate seat. A day after announcing his entry into the race, Coors trails Attorney General Ken Salazar (D) by just six percentage points, 47% to 41%. Salazar has a bigger lead over former Representative Bob Schaffer (R), 49% to 37%. The nominees for each party will not be officially determined until an August 10 primary. The candidates are campaigning for a seat currently held by popular Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Campbell cited health reasons for stepping down. With Campbell in the...

Republican Gov. Bill Owens today withdrew his endorsement of conservative former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer in Colorado's wild U.S. Senate race and threw his support behind Peter Coors, the deep-pocketed political novice who runs the Coors beer empire. Coors is expected to formally announce his candidacy on Tuesday. Schaffer said Owens told him the bad news in a brief telephone call. "He said he was sorry and I told him that I forgive him," Schaffer said. He said Owens listed his complaints, but Schaffer refused to disclose what was said.
