Contrary to political rhetoric, Mexican-style cartel killings and gun battles appear to have already reached the U.S. and are spreading — particularly in California. The region experienced an explosive growth of cartel marijuana grow operations that are taking advantage of legalization and lax laws. This week, federal authorities clashed with one of two gunmen who are accused of killing a family of six — including a 16-year-old female and her baby. The murders took place last month in Tulare County, California, in what some authorities have dubbed a cartel killing.

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) thanked President Joe Biden for halting the construction of border wall along the United States-Mexico border at a North American summit on Tuesday. Alongside Biden and Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, AMLO praised Biden’s immediate halt to border wall construction along the southern border. Ten guards and four inmates were killed in a stunning jailbreak triggered by gunmen in armored vehicles opening fire on a Mexican state prison across the border from El Paso, Texas. At least 24 inmates escaped in the chaos. The San Francisco Public Defender’s office has accused a Latino police officer of racially discriminating against Latino drug dealers in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood. According to public defense attorneys for one of the neighborhood’s alleged drug dealers, Sgt. Daniel Solorzano arrested 53 people for drug sales over a roughly two-year period, all of whom were Latino. Meanwhile, they claim he declined to arrest 43 other people who the police had detained or surveilled, all but two of whom were non-Latino. Solorzano is of Mexican and Nicaraguan heritage and his first language is Spanish.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos oil company acknowledged Thursday it released a huge plume of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, in the Gulf of Mexico late last year. A report published in June by Spanish university researchers in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters estimated that the leak contained about 40,000 tons of methane. The article estimated that would be equivalent to releasing about 3.3 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Mexican authorities found the body of an Angolan migrant child who went missing on May 2 during an illegal border crossing near the Del Rio International Bridge. The young boy disappeared after being swept away along with his brother. The parents survived the crossing. Del Rio Station Border Patrol agents encountered an Angolan couple who illegally crossed the border from Mexico into Texas. The husband and wife informed the agents that their two boys, ages seven and nine, were swept away in the strong currents of the Rio Grande, according to information obtained from Del Rio Sector Border Patrol officials.
