Washington — An alliance of Asian American groups on Friday filed a federal complaint against HarvardUniversity, saying that school and other Ivy League institutions are using racial quotas to admit students other than high-scoring Asians. More than 60 Chinese, Indian, Korean and Pakistani groups came together for the complaint, which was filed with the civil rights offices at the Justice and Education departments. They are calling for an investigation and say these schools should stop using racial quotas or racial balancing in admission. "We are seeking equal treatment regardless of race," said Chunyan Li, a professor and civil rights activist,...

To celebrate the state's thriving bald eagle population, the Pennsylvania Game Commission installed a live nest-cam late last year near Hanover. For those not watching, a pair of eagles worked together for weeks constructing the nest, taking breaks to swoop down on potential food, all in preparation for the arrival of their eggs. The first egg appeared on February 14, followed by a second three days later. After a month or so of incubation, the eggs are expected to hatch around March 21. All of the action can be viewed on the live-cam. One of the more eye-catching frames from...

A group of disgruntled students at Dartmouth College sent an 8-page protest letter to leaders of the Ivy League institution Monday calling for reparations for what they claim is the school’s oppressive and racist atmosphere – and threatened “physical action” if their demands are not met. The list of demands, written by “concerned Asian, Black, Latin@, Native, Undocumented, Queer, and Differently-Abled students,” include: • Racial enrollment quotas for Black and Latino students to “at least 10 percent each” • “Ensure that 47 percent of post-doctoral students are people of color” • “Ban the use of ‘illegal aliens, illegal immigrants, wetback’...

To borrow a line from Dennis Green, they are who we thought they were. From his hospital bed, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has acknowledged his role in planting the explosives near the marathon finish line on April 15, the officials said. The first successful large-scale bombing in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, era, the Boston attack killed three people and wounded more than 250 others. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing investigation, said Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid capture, do not appear to have been...

HANOVER, VA –The FBI raided a Hanover County home in search of child porn, only to discover they'd raided the wrong house. Federal investigators targeted the Mechanicsville home after discovering child porn was being downloaded to computers using the homeowner's internet service, according to federal court documents. But after raiding the home in November and subsequently launching a full investigation, court documents show agents discovered the computers with the downloaded child porn didn't belong to the couple, but a neighbor. David Edward Sleezer, of J David Lane, was arrested and charged with five counts of receiving and distributing child porn....

Bernard L. Madoff said he never thought the collapse of his Ponzi scheme would cause the sort of destruction that has befallen his family. In his first interview for publication since his arrest in December 2008, Mr. Madoff — looking noticeably thinner and rumpled in khaki prison garb — maintained that family members knew nothing about his crimes. But during a private two-hour interview in a visitor room here on Tuesday, and in earlier e-mail exchanges, he asserted that unidentified banks and hedge funds were somehow “complicit” in his elaborate fraud, an about-face from earlier claims that he was the...

June 28, 2008, was a defining moment in my life. It was the day I shot and killed a man in the defense of my life and the lives of others. We all have defining moments. They might not be as tragic as taking another man's life, but they are events that change the way we look at things -- or even, perhaps, how we live our lives. Before that muggy Saturday evening in June, I would have said my defining moments were many: graduating from high school; enlisting in the Army; getting married; having children; getting run over by...

The appearance of nuclear weapons materials on the black market is a growing global concern, and it is crucial that the United States reinforce its team of nuclear forensics experts and modernize its forensics tools to prepare for or respond to a possible nuclear terrorist attack. Large quantities of nuclear materials are inadequately secured in several countries, including Russia and Pakistan. Since 1993, there have been more than 1,300 incidents of illicit trafficking of nuclear materials, including plutonium and highly enriched uranium, both of which can be used to develop an atomic bomb. And these are only the incidents we...

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani cut in half the office staff of his estranged wife, Donna Hanover, yesterday as police officials announced separately that they had reassigned three members of Ms. Hanover's security detail to other jobs. Mr. Giuliani's actions made it clear that he would continue to use the powers of his office to sever his wife from her public role as the city's first lady and to isolate her as much as possible during his final months in office. A police official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said three police detectives assigned to Ms. Hanover to make...

DURHAM, N.C.—One of three Duke University lacrosse players charged with rape wants the case resolved in time for the next school year, his lawyer said in court yesterday. But the judge warned he will not fast-track the proceedings. The case "is not going to jump ahead of the line and be handled any differently," Superior Court Judge Ronald L. Stephens said at a hearing for sophomore Reade Seligmann. After the brief hearing, District Attorney Mike Nifong said he does not expect any trial to begin before next year.

Americans are the thinnest-skinned creatures on the planet. Seems everything offends someone around here these days, and the reactions of "the offended" sometimes make me wonder if our nation has simply lost all of its collective common sense. First, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, better known as the NCAA, has decreed that every college and university with an Indian-based mascot will not be allowed to host post-season events since such use is degrading toward native Americans. This ban includes Florida State University. The fact the Seminole Tribe of Florida's governing council unanimously approved in mid-June a resolution in total support...

Setting the Record: New Trustee Defends His Ideas and His Name By T. J. Rodgers, Guest Columnist Another assistant professor of history, Vernon Takeshita, has written a letter questioning my honesty and integrity regarding race issues. I hope it's the last letter like that. As explained below, this certainly will be the last reply from me on this topic. The terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center have scored one victory beyond the physical -- they have reduced our freedom by causing us to have to deal with measures such as "red alerts" and a government takeover of airport security....

Giuliani: A Very Personal Price for 9-11 By Dianna Thompson Executive Director, American Coalition for Fathers & Children March 18, 2002 As mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani worked tirelessly in the days and weeks following the 9-11 terrorist attacks to bring not only his city back from the brink of disaster, but the nation as well. For this, thousands of Americans have applauded his work in maintaining rescue efforts and securing assistance for the families of those who died in the World Trade Center. The former mayor, who has been involved in a highly publicized divorce battle, found himself...
