Gregg Allman, whose hard-jamming, bluesy sextet the Allman Brothers Band was the pioneering unit in the Southern rock explosion of the ‘70s, died Saturday due to currently unknown causes. He was 69. As recently as April 24, reports surfaced claiming Allman was in hospice. His manager previously denied those reports to Variety, which Allman then substantiated in a Facebook post. However, he had suffered a number of ailments in recent years — including an irregular heartbeat, a respiratory infection, a hernia and a liver transplant — and cancelled many scheduled tour dates in recent months due to undisclosed health reasons.

Death row inmate Fernando Eros Caro died at San Quentin State Prison on Saturday, prison officials said. Caro, 67, was sentenced to death in Santa Clara County Superior Court. He was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Sam Robinson said. The cause of death is pending an autopsy. Caro was sentenced to death for the murders of Jack Lucchesi, Mark Hatcher and Mary Helen Booher and the attempted murder of Rick Donner on Aug. 20, 1980, Robinson said.

Gerald Walpin, the inspector general who was at the center of controversy in 2009 when he was fired by the White House amid an investigation of an Obama friend, died today. He was 84. Walpin's son-in-law, Allan Tananbaum, said Walpin was struck by a car while crossing a street in Manhattan. Walpin was fired in June 2009 for his investigation of the misuse of money in AmeriCorps, the service organization that was part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, where Walpin served as inspector general. Controversial Republican Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe has confirmed that his son died in a plane crash on Sunday. Dr. Perry Inhofe worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Tulsa and was piloting the Mitsubishi MU-2B-25 twin turboprop aircraft that came down five miles from Tulsa International Airport. A man who was critically injured when he poured gasoline over his body and set himself on fire on the Mall on Friday has died of his injuries, according to D.C. police. The man was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Medical Center, where he died about 9 p.m. Friday, said Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman. The man could not immediately be identified because his burns were so severe. Medical personnel will try to determine who he was using DNA analysis, Alali said.

TUCSON- A convenience store clerk who was stabbed early Friday morning has died from his injuries. According to Sergeant Chris Widmer with Tucson Police, 22-year-old Erick Bridges passed away Saturday afternoon. Bridges was stabbed at the AM/PM at 7601 E. Tanque Verde around 1 a.m. Friday. The suspect is described as a thin white and Hispanic man in his 20s, 5-feet-8 inches. He was wearing a grey "hoodie" and jeans and had a dark backpack.
